When water rises over the shore it seems to have a soothing effect on the sand, the sand appears to be smoother and softer after the encounter. In a manner likewise, honesty swept away the rigid mistrust of Tammy's countenance. Although Melinda and Tammy were strangers to one another there was something in their circumstances which enabled them to relate, and this soft ground of common interest had the potential to be fruitful soil for planting seeds of camaraderie.

Tammy took Melinda at her word, it was clear to see that she regarded the latter differently than before. When Tammy spoke next she did so quietly.

"Have you been able to see her yet?" The girl inquired.

Theo shuffled awkwardly at the outskirts of the conversation. He didn't really feel like he belonged here, but he couldn't very well leave Tammy alone with this woman.

Melinda, meanwhile, had settled the entirety of her attention on Tammy. Her gaze was cold, but not unpleasant, similar to the flow of water over skin. There was something intense, however, in having such attention when before Tammy had seemed more like a side-thought.

"She was in no condition for a visit," she replied simply.

She shrugged, glancing back out at the window, "And recent events have made it the less prudent course of action. I have no aversion to waiting".

A little silence had settled when Melinda intoned, in the same cool and effortless tone,"And what are you doing here, Tammy?"

Tammy waited on Melinda's last breath, as Melinda always seemed to leave her hanging on a last word to secure a moment of silence before presenting the next sentence. Tammy did not feel inclined to disrupt the pattern.

"I don't know." Tammy said, looking down and fingering her bandages. It was an evasive answer, but those always came quicker and more readily to a teenager's mind than a honest reflection.

Tammy's gaze had also wandered to that window some moments before, at the exact same moment that Melinda had, though Tammy had not done so consciously.

Unfortunately now with her gaze downcast, Tammy began to think more seriously about why she was here... she could remember the rain and the pounding of her heart in her ears... the dark form that was always behind her, herding her away....
Tammy took a deep breath and looked up again. "I guess I have friends here," she said, and now there was a quick glance in Theo's direction to see if he would support that statement.

Theo cleared his throat, his eyes swinging wildly around the room in a panic as Tammy’s words settled. Melinda could see the clockwork turn, ever so slowly, turn behind his emerald gaze. After an uncomfortably long distance, the boy swallowed uncomfortable and dipped his head in a nod.

“Um… yeah,” he took a step closer to Tammy, in what Melinda assumed defensiveness, “She does…”

Suffice to say, she need not be a genius to detect a lie. Tammy was not here for a visit. The nature of her injuries suggested very well why she was here. She need not the girl to tell her she had been hurt and taken into the pack for care. There were far more pressing matters for her mind to attend.

So instead, Melinda stood, regarding Tammy with a nod, and slowly strode over to the window. There was nothing intent on the gaze outside, as though she were imploring the world outside for a particular sight, yet nonetheless her gaze did not break away.

So then,” she intoned lightly, as though she were merely discussing a sunny day,”I assume your visit is soon to be over?

And then everything went so very wrong.
