Sunflowers and Moonmonsters

Mercy was off and I poised myself over the fish. Poor guy didn't know what was coming. I was careful not to cast a shadow and stepped forward on the gravelly bank, and then--WHSPLASH! I CAUGHT HIM?! Oh, no, he's wriggling-

"NOOO THANK YOU!"

I chucked the fish right towards Mercy and shuddered all over.

Mercy jumped up onto her forearms. Her ears sprang up in an instant and her nose came forward - only to be slapped by the fish! Mercy sprang to her feet in alarm! She didn't appear to know whether she should flee or attack the fish for fear. But this peculiar happening did incite something in her mind, something that was dormant. She didn't attack the fish with her maw, but made a strange grab at it with her paws. She failed to catch it. The fish bobbled and bounced across the grass and she chased it - pounce, upon pounce...

I couldnt help it. Watching Mercy chase a flopping fish was funny. I started to laugh;

”Don’t let it get away! Use your teeth,” I wheezed.

Mercy pounced again and almost got it. She was standing on the fish with both her palms, now, staring at it with her ears erect and facing straight down. But the fish wiggled and was free in a moment. Mercy turned her ear back at Robin's advice. Then she shot down, face first into the mud! - And missed. The fish slipped back into the stream and was gone.

Where was the hunting drive of this hunter? Mercy was uncoordinated and clumsy. She had been completely ineffective against Josh, and now she let the perfect prey escape.

“Aw, next time hun, you’re getting used to those paws.” I laughed some more. Lucky fish, I guess. He’s gonna go home and tell his buddies “You’re never gonna believe this”.

Now I moved back over to Mercy. “Can you speak? Or d’ya forget how?” I asked, tilting my head one way, then another, before whining out a quiet little bark for emphasis.

Mercy spat out the grass and dirt in her mouth, flexing her tongue in and out of her maw. The action became so repetitive that she flinched, sat down, and began to rub her eyes and head vigorously, as if to dust the dirt out of her brain. When she was through, she fell back and caught herself with her hand. Her weight fell to one shoulder and her posture looked a little bit more human.

Mercy kept blinking her eyes. Then she shook her head.

"You can understand me well enough though." I straightened my head.

"That boy from before is our friend, alright?"

Mercy squinted incredulously and lifted her head.

"What?" She said. It didn't sound quite human, but it was there - a spoken word.

"There it is. You heard me." I lowered my chin and raised my eyebrow up in the same motion.

"Don't hurt him again. He had it comin' the first time."

Mercy's ears fell flat against her head and she looked out across the clearing in the direction the offender had gone.
