Thomas nodded his head. "Mrs. Buttermilk is a good lady," he said. "You do good by her and you'll have a decent job in no time. She's a mighty fine cook as well, so you mind yourself."

Thomas came forward and unlocked the door of Saber's cell, motioning for the boy to come out.

"If Mrs. Buttermilk thinks you've earned it, you'll get your things back as well." He said, looking at Sophia now, "I'll just hold on to them until then."

As Officer Clark nodded and began to speak, Saber angrily watched him now. When Officer Clark beckoned him out of the cell however, Saber didn't budge. He waited till the Officer was done talking before even making any kind of movement to leave.
He growled low in his throat as he rolled his eyes before putting down his hands on the edge of the bench and dragging himself up. Slowly he made his way out of the cell, his threatening eyes now fixed back on Granny Buttermilk, watching her carefully.

Granny smiled and nodded in response to Officer Thomas, accepting his terms regarding Saber's things. Thank you Tommy. I'll call if there are any problems, but I don't think there will be. By the way, how's your lovely wife and the girls? I ain't seen them 'round lately-- Though, I 'spect all this talk of bears or whatever folks've been sightin' has got most the folk in jitter-fits. Anyway, I've been meanin' to do some visitin' and bring over a treat for ya'll, but I've just been plumb short of time. Now that I've got a little more help with the shop, I expect I'll be able to find some. She cast one discreet glance at her new charge, trying his patience by continuing the conversation with Thomas.

That made two loners over a very short period of time. Werewolves were just drawn to this mountain, weren't they? Of course they were. That was one of the mountain's many mysteries: It beckoned to them then concealed them... And most weren't even aware of it.

The old lady chuckled quietly to herself.

Saber didn’t care that Granny Buttermilk had started to chit chat to Officer Clark. It was a bit odd to talk about more personal things around a possible felony, neither really knew his criminal background after all, but clearly the old lady didn’t seem to care to consider such possibilities. No, Saber didn’t care because now that he was out of the cell, he had a new angle and view of the room to look at. Tucking his hands into his pockets, he listened to the two as his eyes carefully made there way around the room, studying his surroundings more as he waited.

Thomas smiled in his usual way which was always warm and somewhat reserved, yet on the topic of his girls there was a particular pleasantness about his features.

"Oh, they've been well off. Thank you, Mrs Buttermilk." He said. "Molly misses bringing the girls by your place. She says 'a girl can't get by without seeing all Sophia has in store daily', but Abby is starting kindergarten next year and Katie's getting a new tooth in. So, they've all gone over to Middlecrest to have a girl's night at the mall this evening."

Officer Clerk hadn't forgotten about Saber, he was a police office after all and had a mind for business in all matters. However, having already judged the matter, Thomas was unconcerned by what Saber might overhear.

Kindergarden and a new tooth? My, how the time flies! I'd better hurry up and make that treat or they'll be leavin' for collage before I see them again. Granny laughed, Well, give 'em my best and you take care too, Tommy. I'll come by as soon as I can.

With this, the old woman affectionately patted the officer on the hand and turned to leave, gesturing in a glance for Saber to come with her. Come now, young man. Let's get you squared away at my place and show you what you'll be doin' for me.

Saber settled his dark brown eyes back onto Granny Buttermilk as she called for him, his eyes now fixed on glaring at her once more. He reluctantly followed behind her as she made her exit of the small police building. However not long after crossing only a few meters from the building, Saber stopped. His eyes burned as they watched Granny Buttermilk closely, his voice low and irritated. “ Alright, enough with the dang act- I’m not going any further until you answer my questions.”

My mother used to always come home from work at the E.R. with wild stories about all the deaths she dealt with on full moons. She said it was an old nurse's superstition that people were more likely to get hurt when the moon was bright.

Judging by the types of creatures this man describes, what shows up in this town during the full moon is a lot bigger than superstition.

It takes me a moment to realize that I've stiffened all over, the crust of the sandwich I ate mushed in my fists.

"You could have Arenotelicons," I say smally. "maybe Rougarou?"

But who am I kidding? This guy is onto me. He knows.I don't know how he knows me, I've always done my turning in the woods nearby. I made a cage for myself and everything.

My heart crawls right up into my throat. That's the cue for my ever trusty flight reflex to kick in.

"I'm leaving," I suddenly announce, jumping to my feet. I struggle for a moment under the weight of my pack; assorted metal bits jangle around as I catch my balance. Then, of course, I give my good buddy a nice pair of finger guns, thank him for the sandwhich, turn and begin to power-walk away.

"Good luck with the Rougarou!" I toss over my shoulder on my way out.

Granny knew by the absence of following footsteps that the young man had stopped, but continued without looking back, even after Saber voiced his demand. Loners were often arrogant and cocky. This wasn't the first time one had ordered her around like she didn't outrank him-- But to put him in his place as he deserved would be giving in and doing exactly what he demanded she do.

Ohohoho no. she'd answer his questions alright, but she'd do it her way.

After having put a distance of a few feet between them, the old woman paused and looked around with big doe eyes, as though she had only just now heard the demand. Then she smiled. Oh goodie! I love answering questions. Ask away! Granny laughed, But try to keep up while ya' do, my ears ain't what they used to be.

Saber's eyes narrowed as Granny Buttermilk kept marching on, then taunting him in an attempt to get him to follow her. She probably thought herself clever for her tactic, but Saber's resolve would not be broken so easily. So he crossed his arms as he stood his ground waiting for her to come back to him.
