Werewolves (RP20) When the Mountain Replied

Bianca went away, following whatever thing interested her senses. Now the first object of her curiosity was closer to the camp than she had been, but resting just out of sight. She approached it with her head low and ears forward. He had mentioned it, in her presence. Perhaps she remembered.

The stranger, one that she could smell on the air and who's own scent was clearly distinct, had left his sled of belongings propped up against a tree. It was about five feet long, and wrapped in animal hide and rope. She came up to it, nostrils flaring in heavy breath, and a low growl in her chest, occasionally interrupted as she inspected it closer... then with a swipe of her paw, she knocked it over and sunk her teeth into rope and hide, shaking her head to rip it open!

Swish swish

With the eyes of a trained predator, Jackie watched the beginnings of the hunt from her vantage. She could understand now Timothy's participation in the hunt, yet Logan would clearly be ill-suited for it with her bulky form and imprecise movements. Perhaps the alpha envisioned some kind of danger?

In any case, whatever lay ahead of it was far more interesting than sitting in a tree all night. She coiled power in her hind legs and jumped down in a single-bound. It was not nearly so silent as she might have hoped - if Kratos had known a way for a werewolf to jump down 20 feet from a tree in perfect silence, then he surely had not taught it to Jackie. Yet in another breath she was coming up silently to join the hunting party.

It was a little different to walk silently on four legs than on two. In every step, she could feel the power and mass of her limbs she otherwise would not possess; and with it, it became more difficult to mask her own movements. She glanced to Kratos and Timothy, observing their movements, and doing her best to match them.

As she passed Logan, she could not help but flash her teeth in what was, presumably, a smirk.

Logan gave the smirk no heed, and watched Jackie go forward and try to find her footing.

Where was Sabrina? She turned her head in the direction she believed the healer to be, and her ears twitched one towards the leaving group and one towards the cabins. By now she assumed Sabrina should have set Liam to a task, and if there was a hunt - who better to join than the daughter of the Phantom Pack alpha?

Logan hesitated to follow. Finally, she turned aside and moved inwards towards the cabins.. they would need watching.

Once Timothy had a direction, he branched away... it would be entirely unprofitable to conglomerate upon their prey. No, Timothy knew better, and he hated to lose his query. If there was something to be found, well... His turquoise eyes surveyed the Alpha warily. Kratos was strong, and skilled. But he was not fast... At least, not as fast as Timothy knew himself to be. Stronger but slower; these attributes could be utilized to press the prey from hiding. Kratos also gave direction, and Timothy was keen not to forget that. But Timothy was as able to think independently as he was dependent on the alpha for leadership and cohesion with the pack. So long as Kratos did his part, Timothy would do his.

Ulric stood a moment listening to the sounds of the forest after Timothy sprang to answer Kratos' call. The forest seemed to fall quiet.

'Why didn't Kratos answer? Surely, surely he knew the hymn...' Ulric's heart wondered and his mind felt perplexed and confused.

Slowly, he followed after Bianca. When he came on her, digging out the contents of Liam's pack like a beast, his shoulders sank.

"Oh, Bianca..." He murmured sorrowfully.

Alpha Kratos stalked slowly across the forest floor. His shoulders rolled over every step and his hackles swayed above his ears. He watched as Timothy branched off into the trees, widening his search. Timothy knew about the Phantom Herb... he would not rely on scent. Good. Kratos' yellow eyes glanced keenly behind him, though his ears kept on the task at hand. He saw Logan hesitate, and falter behind. She made a choice not to join the hunt. Kratos believed he knew why. So be it. Turning his eyes to the muddy tracks again, the Alpha Kratos continued the hunt.

Jenn's attention was affixed at the entry of the cave. She counted the sounds and the minutes that passed.

Meanwhile, John wandered to the back of the cave. It was a dead end on this side. On the floor, he stooped to pick up on of the curious lumps of wood he saw before. Looking at it, he found out it was a carving of an animal. In fact, all the wooden figures were carved animals. Someone had taken up quite a collection. But who?

At just that moment, there was a sound in the forest outside. Both Jenn and John were alerted to it. But even with Jenn pointing her flashlight out of the cave's mouth, she didn't see anything.

Logan came out of the treeline surrounding the den grounds. She paused there.

Toby and Theo were still here. This was good.

Where was Levi? That he hadn't appeared recently was either to his benefit or disadvantage, but it was too much a risk to call for him, so she had to believe he was safe. She began to move along the perimeter, discerning what she might..

Liam and Sabrina were still near at hand, as were Bianca and Ulric. In fact, the two pairs were nearly parallel one another, if still a short distance away.

If Logan could herd them all into a cabin and set herself at the doorstep like a gargoyle, she would. Alas, she did not think they would let her, and in any case - did they trust her to defend them? Too many today had seen her weakness. Her confidence and pride were wounded, and she did not have the time to nurse either spiritual or physical wounds.

The defender circled the whole of the dens, before entering the forests near Sabrina and Liam, and coming into their company.

"Je tam votrelec." she said in a low, quiet voice to Sabrina. "Kratos ich prenasleduje spolu s Jackiem a Timothym.." she turned her ears in the direction that she had left the Alpha and his small hunting party. "Votrelec používa bylinku." she said, and looked between Liam and Sabrina. If she wondered what they were talking about, she didn't appear too concerned.

"Našli ste dnes večer využitie pre tohto muža?Myslím, že z toho bude pekný koberec." she said, and looked Liam over in a glance. Then returned her gaze to Sabrina. "Ak Timotej dovolí, môže byť užitočný pri love." she added, more solemnly. "Zostanem pri domoch."

“There's an intruder. she said in a low, quiet voice to Sabrina. "Kratos is chasing them together with Jackie and Timothy.." she turned her ears in the direction that she had left the Alpha and his small hunting party. "The intruder uses the herb." she said, and looked between Liam and Sabrina. If she wondered what they were talking about, she didn't appear too concerned.

"Did you find a use for this man tonight? I think it will make a nice rug." she said, and looked Liam over in a glance. Then she returned her gaze to Sabrina. "If Timothy allows, he can be useful in the hunt." she added, more solemnly. "I'll stay with the houses."

Bianca responded to Ulric's quiet reproach with a tilt of her ears. They went against her skull briefly, and forward again as she continued to pilfer through Liam's objects with her back turned towards the young man. Clothes, instruments and weapons were strewn about, and she was hunched over her find protectively.

A little growl was summoned in her throat, without showing her teeth; a warning to him not to come closer to her new treasures.

Jackie took Kratos' other flank as Timothy peeled away, as though sensing Timothy's thoughts on the matter. She may as well have been a ghost for how little sign she left of her passing. She could not smell what was around her, yet neither could she be sensed.

She had been curious by the phantom herb for some time. Sabrina used it often with such ease it might be thought of as an easy tool. But it was not so. For all the time she had spent tuning her sense of smell in her human form, now that training meant nothing. Or was it perhaps the opposite? For although she did not have the advantage of her better sense of smell, she had learned how to track prey in the woods by more than smell alone. She knew how to read the turned earth and disturbed foliage as well as she could read a book.

Now it occurred to her she did not know what they hunted. She had presumed it to be a deer or elk. But would it really require three wolves to take one down? Maybe a herd of elk? Her ear flicked, but she could not ask Kratos lest she discard the benefit of their silence. So, she could only follow and observe what signs the earth around her told.

"O-oh!" Theo seemed surprised by Toby's question. But why should he be? It was a perfectly normal question. Theo had just assumed Toby's first question might be what kind of tea.

"Um, yeah, I have one I found at Zeit's a while ago and I got permission to take it- it's um, well we can brew a few times to have enough. For uh, anyone that's wants some..."

He glanced somberly to the empty shell of the cabins. Most of the pack had wandered far and wide...

"Uh, also, have you seen Levi? Thought uh, maybe he'd want to join too..."

Toby felt dubious that they would be joined by others, but that only made the prospect of tea more enticing. When Theo brought up Levi, Toby seemed suddenly a bit crestfallen and looked down at his own paws. "Oh, uh, n-no... I haven't seen him. I haven't really seen anyone since moon rise." Secretly, Toby felt that Theo's inquiry about Levi was actually his original purpose; he's come looking for Levi to begin with, but catching sight of Toby, offered tea as a formality. He probably hadn't expected Toby to accept his offer. In his mind, he tried to figure out how to tactfully give Theo an excuse to continue looking for Levi.

"You could howl for him... If you're comfortable with howling."

***********

It would become all too obvious all too quickly that the intruder had been on the mountain for awhile; all morning in fact, and had been in wolf form the entire time. They kept to carefully chosen paths through tall foliage, careful to make as little disturbance as possible, and keep to such trees and rocks as would provide cover. Very little of the grass was crushed or disturbed. There was no evidence of them having turned around and gone back at any point, yet discrepancies in several footprints seemed to indicate they had been stepped in twice.

Theo remained unaware of Toby's insecurities. At best, he assumed perhaps Toby was still feeling jumpy from the full moon. He nodded thoughtfully.

"Alright.. if you.. think it wouldn't be too scary" he said softly.

He lifted his head and let out a soft howl that nonetheless carried well over the vicinity of the cabin and surrounding woods. It was not a confident tone, yet nor was it a feeble one. He resisted to sing his voice to its full potential, yet even when stifled, the musicality of those deep, timber notes could not be missed. Levi, come along, it said.

When he finished, he turned back to Toby, "Well. In the meantime, we can get started, uh, if you want? I uhm, just need to get the pot"
