Werewolves (RP15) The Waking Dawn

PreviousPage 22 of 32Next

There were instances, though rare, of werewolves being born without the ability to change forms. Even in a pack so consumed by blood prejudices as the Svalnaglas it was so. In fact, it was to that end an entire faction of the Svalnaglas was dedicated to preserve the integrity of the race. All facts which Ulric might have mentioned to Logan had not her attention turned elsewhere. She raised her question and the subject seemed dropped, so Ulric let it be.

Ulric breathed deeply. He could smell the rain-spent fields and the pond water overflowing. He could smell wet wood, and the wet woods themselves as well as all the herbs in them. He could even smell, as his mind now recognized and regarded, the distant Phantom Herb with it's scent elusive to wolf-kind.

"I don't know..." Ulric admitted after a moment. "The wind has shifted. But let's go see."

Following behind at her own pace, Logan took in the scents - Jackie was up ahead already, Toby was present, and Zeit. Other scents were mingled, too indistinct to decipher from afar and being carried to and fro by the breeze.

Something about the familiarity and uncertainty, the weather - was both as distant and foggy as it was clear. Logan had come to terms with the fact her memory was never the clearest - it hung onto the emotions felt in the situation more than the details, and recollection was more of a dream than certain laid facts. Even if she had, she couldn't remember interacting with Zeit - not since that night Zeit was wounded in the crossfire of Kimberly's death. This caused her to give pause.

"Go ahead. I will be soon behind."

Sabrina nodded to Saber. "Good," she said. "Your life may very well depend on that some day. Though, not today. Today you are in good hands, whether you trust them or not."

She took a deep breath, tightened her lips, and gave another quick nod. "I'll leave you to your own devices now. You should eat. The herbs I gave you will help with the soreness. But only food will give you back your strength. Come and find me when you're feeling better. I shall be outside tending the garden."

Levi sat still on the porch, wishing there was something he could do or say to give Bianca some confidence. But that was the funny thing about that, you had to have some confidence in order to lend it. And confidence came to him only in spurts.

He had confidence in her, though.

"Aye, I miss 'er too," he said after a moment. "Funny, innae it? Calling this a pack and still feelin' so lonely? But y'know, weren't much different in my pack, back home. My da, he's about the only one I feel I've ever really known, and even then, he's always been more like a sort o' guardian angel. Always there in the background lookin' o'er you, but never gets too close. Always like that, my da. Even after I joined Sabres' pack.

Ulric stopped and looked at Logan. "Are you sure?" He said.
His hands were still in his pockets. He seemed to stand a little slumped.

Ulric was hesitant to leave, but if Logan wanted to be alone then he would walk a little ahead.

Meanwhile, in the woods behind the field.

Kratos approached the boisterously swelling stream. The water was running fast and dark down out of the mountain, carrying with it all manner of woodland debris. It was not yet so high as to exceed its bounds, yet surely if it swelled much more it would be flowing into the field.
Kratos lifted his eyes from the water to study the forest on the other side of it. The bank was much higher on that side than on his. The foliage was dense and dark thereabout, and the trees trembled in the wind... For all this, there seemed little doubt something was amiss, yet Kratos sensed something less obvious at work.

Saber's body relaxed ever so slightly, but the intensity in his eyes never seemed to diminish.

" Thank you," he said. His gaze lingered on Sabrina for a moment as if there was more he wanted to say, but nothing came out.

Soon he went back to looking up at the ceiling, the emotions from before spiraling in his dark eye once more.

Bianca listened to Levi, even after having grabbed a broom and beginning to clear off the porch - which was covered in dust that had been kicked up by the rain. Shoe prints and paw-prints both could be seen in the contrast of the dust to the wood.

"Sometimes it's easier to feel alone in a group," she observed quietly, not disregarding the rest of his story. "That's really bittersweet, Levi. I can't imagine not being able to connect with someone I love. What about your mom?"

A tight knot was forming in Logan's stomach. She inhaled the air but only found the confusing scents made it worse. In the last weeks, there were so many complicated things that challenged her humanity and beast in ways she was ever uncertain on how to process and cope with. Her gut reaction was to fight what harmed her, and yet there was nothing to fight - you couldn't fight thoughts or emotions. The more she tried to shove them to the back of her mind the louder they protested.

All of that misguided energy had to go somewhere - in this case, it twisted and twirled in her stomach. It made her head spin and her heart pound in her ears.

She gave a long blink to Ulric, as if to say, "I warned you", and turned into the tall grass, heaving until she was on her knees. After each event, the would be silence was filled with a long string of foreign words, until all of yesterday and the current day's intake had been tossed into the field.

She knelt hunched over for a while, one hand to support herself and one hand to obstruct the view between she and Ulric. The hand she held up towards Ulric turned into a pointed finger, "Do not, speak anything." she stated, looking at her thoughts spilled out before her.

When the lurching subsided and the pounding and spinning had passed, she felt quite a lot better. If it was possible to purge thoughts and emotions, Logan had just done so, quite effectively.

She spat and wiped her mouth. Standing, she kicked up dirt to cover her work, wiped her hands on her pants and gestured towards Zeit's cabin. "Let's go."

Amongst the dark shrubbery far off on the other side of the brook, two eyes peered at the alpha.

Samantha sat behind a tree, her knees to her chest. Her heart was pounding, almost in harmony with the heartbeat she heard next to her.

She watched the woods in front of her in quiet anticipation, even though she knew she wasn't facing where the danger lied. Every bit of wind that rustled the trees caused her gaze to shift. Every time she looked, she half expected to see a silhouette of a large creature looking at her with beady eyes. But every time she looked, nothing but the rustling woods was found.

As she felt the wind blow through her blonde hair, her arms hugged a little tighter around her. She turned towards the boy next to her, who was staring like a hawk through the bush he hide behind. She slowly cupped her hands around her mouth, and with her quietest whisper she could muster she asked,

" Is it the big one?"

Perhaps it was only happenstance where his gaze fell, and perhaps he did not see the child. No one could say, but Kratos stared into the woods until his eyes came to meet the gaze of the boy in the bramble.
"Come out." He said. "I do not feel like chasing you."

Ulric quickly turned away from Logan and pretended to be preoccupied as she heaved on the ground. When she finished, he looked at her empathetically.
"That was Timothy yesterday... maybe something's going around." He said, knowing that it was not the case.

He followed her quietly.
