Werewolves (RP15) The Waking Dawn

PreviousPage 18 of 32Next

"Any one of us can track a blood trail, Jackie." Ulric looked around at the group. "But some of us are better at it than others."

The secret was in the night Ulric arrived at the ranch. The night Ulric found Jackie laying in her own blood... who had been on her heels that night? Who left her there to search for her medicine? How had he known that she needed it?
Ulric remembered laying in the tall grass that night, looking at the lantern flickering over Zeit's porch as the shadow came from the house. He saw him in the field. Ulric looked now at Timothy.

The dawning realization - and horror - came upon her all at once. For indeed the letter was by now tossed to the seven winds when she'd tossed it out of the car window the day before.  Whether she caught the side-long glance in Timothy's direction, as well as the implication of cohesively working together as a unit, was left unsaid.  Already her mind was racing to the next step.

"We'll need to go back to town. The letter is gone," she turned towards the cabin, "But if I know my sister, all her plans have redundancies".

The rancher continued her glare for a moment longer at Officer Smith before huffing. She then trained her eyes onto her new target, storming over to the group with fire in her eyes as she approached. Something was off on this, and she sure as hell did not like it one bit.

"Since the one over there couldn't give me a proper answer, y'all better start talking now" she announced with a growl, "I want to see this so called warrant, I want an explanation to what it's for and how no one called me to inform me that people seem to want to raid my ranch, and then I want want all of your names, badge numbers, and units. I will have words to speak to Sheriff Hal about you rookies who are as useful as a trapdoor on a canoe!"

She eyed the officers, foot taping away as she expected answers. She shot a look over to Kratos too, deciding to badger him later on all the events once she got these men to leave.

Officer Smith exhaled in silent relief as Zeit headed over to Officer Owen and the others.

Officer Owen spoke for awhile to Zeit and Kratos. He explained what was asked. He indeed had a search warrant. He then explained they had tried to find contact information to get ahold of miss Chandler but nobody seemed to know hide or hair of where she had gone to at all- the towns folk just noticed she had upped and left one day. They weren't even aware she had left someone to care for her ranch in her stead.

Saber's name, "Lee Chang" and the fact he'd likely be going under an alias, his picture and the Pinerich police number were left with Kratos and Zeit. They were told to call them immediately if they found him- dead or alive, as they explained they suspected if he hadn't found cover for the storm, his remains were likely somewhere on the mountain and that maybe one of their guard dogs might find it one day.
But Officer Owen also stressed that if they were harboring him at all, they would be putting themselves in danger; Saber had a riddled history with several suspected and known gang members and his apartment was in clear disarray when he disappeared, indicating a fight. Someone was suspected to be after him, and anyone who got in their way would be in danger.

Eventually, all the police Officers and their tracking dogs left. Kratos, Toby and Zeit were soon alone on the ranch.

Inhaling deeply and exhaling the breath, Logan watched as Jackie realized that she had thrown away what might have been a useful tool in her endeavor. Logan had once made the mistake of entrusting Jackie with something precious to her.. now, she observed the fiery haired woman with an almost sympathetic look on her face. Every move she had seen Jackie make was desperate, lacking calculation, and as volatile as an open flame.

She listened as Ulric attempted to hear her side and humor her, and followed his eyes to Timothy. How could Ulric even toy with the idea of utilizing Timothy's unbridled will to aid in the search? Ulric cared so deeply, but Logan perceived it was clouding his judgement. Logan returned her eyes to Ulric, and Jackie in turn.

"We'll need to go back into town."

"No." Logan said, firmly, her voice nearly a growl. "If you try to leave, I will stop you. I have showed that I can." resolute and decided, she stood to her full height.

"Ulric." she said his name loudly, to be clear she was not requesting his attention. "Your father, is he not a powerful Alpha? Write him a letter." she looked to Bianca. "Does Bianca not have a grandfather - as she said, who found a woman on this mountain in one night?"

Zeit listened to what was explained to her, still tense but looking less likely that she was about to commit a homicide and hide the body. Her gaze never left Officer Owen, following him even as he left her land. Something about them bothered her, growing up in the bend, she knew the townsfolk, something about this crew was not familiar, and it concerned her.

She was quiet for a moment after everyone left, only relaxing once she could no longer hear any vehicles on the road. She snorted, relaxing her arms and stance, moving to rub at the brow of her nose as she let out a sigh. "Please tell me nothing was set ablaze while I was gone" she started saying to Kratos, before changing her mind, "actually, don't tell, I don't want to know. I just got home and people were crawling around, and now I need to check the fields."

She grumbled to herself, mentally counting the amount of cookies she could snack on, she had planned on trying to make Granny's goodies last, but today was trying her. Also, was it too early to add rum to her coffee? She thought to herself for a bit, before sighing once more and beginning to move so she could unload her truck.

Toby didn't get a chance to respond to the officers inquiry about Phantom Flowers-- Not that he ever intended to. Just that slip up was enough to send Toby into a throws of imaginary instances where he either ends up in jail or in the cabins secret basement as cruel and unusual punishment for saying too much. Then Zeit appeared from the blue! Toby almost fell over. Zeit. Now. After all this time and so suddenly. What were the odds? Once again, everything that Granny had told Toby about the mountain last night came flooding to his memory. It seemed all the more believable with every passing second. The timing of all this just couldn't be coincidence.

Toby remained quiet as Zeit confronted the officers, they explained the situation in detail to her, then departed. He kept his eyes glued to the ground and one hand holding the opposite arm tightly, trying for all intents and purposes to be invisible. It was always so intimidating being the only person around when the Alpha and the Beta were together-- It had happened once before, and Toby just felt so small...

And yet, he would have to get used to this feeling. There was no better time to relay Granny's message.

...Actually, no. There was a better time: The time AFTER Zeit and Kratos had gotten to catch up. He was sure they had a lot to talk about, and once they were in the middle of it, he'd sneak off to the cabins to wait for them. For now, silence was best.

Sabrina seemed satisfied when Saber took his medicine. "That should help you relax, and ease the pain and stiffness," she said. She watched him a moment more, a little wistful.

"You need to eat," she said earnestly. "That'll help you more than any medicine right now. I swear it's not going to kill you. I have your list, and I was careful. Everything was thoroughly washed and never touched any of your allergens. You have my word on that."

Saber's face had become something akin to stone. He stared at the wall, his features not seeming to budge. The only thing that still seemed to be moving was the emotions in his eyes; Distance. Sorrow. Fear. It was hard to know for certain what he felt, but with how deep it appeared, it was unlikely some fleeting thing from the present moment.

Eventually Saber moved, and turned to look at Sabrina. Something changed in his eyes.

" I trust you," he said, and it was clear he meant it.

"Logan..." Ulric said, lowering his chin. "It's not that easy. If Melinda is being held somewhere, and we get the police involved, she may disappear forever. We'll never see her again."

And what of the Great Alpha Abravious? Would not he lend his resources to this cause?

"My father is in a complicated position in his pack..." Ulric furrowed his brow as he spoke. "We could ask him for his help, but it takes time to send a letter. If I went, I might not be able to come back."

Kratos watched the police cruisers disappear from sight. Then he plucked up the pickaxe by the hilt and left Toby standing by the fence.

Zeit busied herself, as always, with a low audible grumble under her breath.  Kratos set the pickaxe iron-down on the earth and helped her unencumber the cargo bed.

"We spent the summer in the mountains." He said at length, his voice low and easy. He surveyed Zeit's countenance carefully. Much about her appearance, from her hair to the clothes she wore, was different. One could not tell now that she had worn a bullet hole three months ago. Kratos stood where he could catch her eye, and tilted his head just so that she might meet his gaze.

"How is your family, Zeit?" He asked.
