Werewolves (RP15) The Waking Dawn

How great the response was to Logans transformation was unexpected by her. Levi and Timothy quickly joined, and Ulric was clearly distressed. Nonetheless, she would not relent. She approached the gate and with her free hand-giant, clumsy and clawed, she worked on undoing the latch, ears swiveling back behind her as Ulric voiced his concern and his question.

Logan looked down at Jackie, eyes reiterating Ulrics question-“where is she?”. She held Jackie tightly but did not hinder her breathing, as she distributed the pressure of her arm evenly over Jackies torso. It was sure to be uncomfortable, however.

If Timothy and Levi wanted to watch, Logan would not stop them-yet she intended to offer them no chance to intervene, and for Timothy-who hovered like an eager vulture, she would not offer a drop of blood to satisfy whatever it was he was seeking. She knew since the moment she came to the territory he had sought reason to remove her, and in spite of their battle together against the creature in the mountain, she was aware of how little things had changed- if at all.

“We are talking, that is all. Go inside.” Logan uttered dismissively, “aha.” She was able to get the latch undone, “Do you have anything to say Jackie?”

Everything was dark and still. He held the key. He always held the key. And she waited - alone in the dark.  Alone in a tomb whose clasp she herself had shut. The metal sides were cold against her, yet her breath was always too-hot against her face. There was small holes embedded in the sides so the air could enter - but not much. Her breath needed to be slow, and shallow or else she would consume the air faster than it could enter. It was like drowning.

“You have to master your fears,” he’d told her once, when she had asked why, “What you will become is a creature of pure instinct.  Those who cannot master their fears will be consumed by them, and then you will be no more than a beast that needs to be put out of its misery”.

It had sounded reasonable, the first time.  Two days later, he retrieved her.  And three days after that, he’d asked her to do it again. She’d refused.

“Where are you going?” he asked. Unconcerned. Because he knew the answer.

“Home,” she told him, like it was obvious, “I’m going home to—“

“To whom?” he asked, “Who is waiting for you?”

She stopped. No one was waiting for her.

“You’ve already left one family,” he mused, “Could you really leave your second? I am one thing.. but could you really do that to your sister?”

Though Logan had not impeded her breathing, the result was the same: her chest fell to a stand-still, and if she breathed at all it was not enough to be felt.  Her teeth were clenched, her skin cold and clammy to the touch, and even the pupils of her eyes fell to a pinprick. Her pulse raced like a hummingbird's beneath Logan's touch. The question, twice asked, remained unanswered.

If Logan noticed, she hadn’t immediately changed her prerogative.. she didn’t want Jackie to leave. In spite of all that had occurred, Jackie was her friend-or at least that’s how she perceived it. In spite of their differences, of which there were many, they seemed to understand each others complexities and naunces.

It went without saying, that a friend didn’t put a friend in a cage.

Her grip on Jackie’s much smaller human form slackened, and with a breath, she lowered Jackie to the ground with her ears pinned back. Her back remained turned against the others, and she slammed her fists on the chain link fence, and kept them there, pressing her forehead against it between her hands.

The affect once Logan had released her was instantaneous. Instinctively, Jackie had held her breath tight when Logan had held her and had taken in only the smallest and shallowest of breaths. As soon as the pressure had abated, and the open sky yawned before her, the instinct was gone. Instead her lungs only burned from the absence of what had been denied - and suddenly she was swallowing in air like a gasping fish.  It was all she could do but lay there for several minutes, every breath feeling like too little, even when it made her all the more breathless and dizzy.

Sense did not return to her quickly. When it had, she found herself lying with her back against the earth, the blue sky ahead, and the outline of Logan's hunkered form against the outline of the pit's fence.  Her skin was damp and her body felt ravenously cold, yet she resisted the urge to shiver in fear she wouldn't stop.  Slowly, she sat upright, drawing her fingertips over the goose flesh of her arms. Even that motion stung, as though she had just finished running miles.

She stared at Logan, finding something solemn to the lone figure against the lattice of the fence and the sky above. Her lips twisted with half a word, though she did not know to what.  She still felt half-removed from herself - and yet, circumstance necessitated something ought be said...

"The man I called father..." Jackie said hoarsely, "He had many training exercises, to prepare me...Because of one, I can't stand small spaces. Or feeling... trapped".

She offered half a glance to Ulric.  He was already well-aware of that fear - because of it, she had caused most of the chaos in that small cavern in the mountains. Though Ulric might claim responsibility for the child he turned, she could not otherwise deny her own contribution.

Bianca watched Levi leave in a hurry, with Timothy right beside him.

She could sense Theo's discomfort with the situation - even with all that time spent in the mountains, he hadn't quite opened up to anyone except Toby. And it seemed, a bond had been forged between himself and Levi while they had been lost in the woods.

"Here we go again, huh." Bianca said, almost dismissively as she looked out the window - she knew she couldn't stop the titans. It seemed as quickly as it had begun it was over with some shouting. Even after events that left everyone exhausted, Logan was still able to change forms in broad daylight. Levi likewise made it look easy. A lot of folks here had good control of their secondary forms, she observed - but few had control over their emotions, including herself. Still, she couldn't sit and do nothing. Not after Kratos appointed her den-mother.

Bianca walked out and crossed her arms from the porch. She dropped her shoulders in a sigh and walked up to Levi, putting a hand on his shoulder. "You need to take a breath, you're escalating the situation." she said, looking towards Timothy, and back to Levi. "Why don't you go back inside and talk to Theo?" she whispered, then looked to Timothy. "Timothy, pipe down or I'll alert Kratos, stop being such a jerk."

Now her eyes settled on Ulric, Logan and Jackie. The latter two ruined a perfectly pleasant breakfast and Bianca was not in the mood. She had only just given Logan all of the nice gifts for her to stretch out her new clothes right away.

"There is nothing that can be done today, that can't wait until tomorrow. Logan - you don't need to go into town, you just want to avoid socializing with everyone else. Frankly, you stand out more than anyone else here. You're not even from this country. Also, you're bleeding through your jacket. Jackie, you're here, right now. Ulric has relatives in the mafia. My mom has been missing since I was a kid. You don't think we're not all suffering and sacrificing together? Logan is right, you're going to hurt more than yourself - not for-" Bianca stopped, "the last time."

"I get it, I'm a kid, you guys are going to listen or you're not. But if we actually sat and talked like people instead of acting like animals every time our emotions got the best of us, we just might make progress. And we just might be able to start digging out those skeletons in a unified effort, one by one. Most of you were gone yesterday, but my grandfather was able to coordinate a team of twelve, to find a needle in the haystack on the mountain - in a matter of a few hours, they found a woman and a child in a cave on this huge mountain range. That's what collaboration and teamwork accomplishes. Our numbers are almost the same. But if you want to go start wildfires all over the country, and end up someone else's skeleton, so be it. We can choose to be powerful together, or a detriment to ourselves and others apart, but there is no in between."

Logan's ears pinned back and her hackles pricked - to be reprimanded by someone as young as Bianca was a great offense. Then she saw the wound had reopened and remembered how short a time it had been since the trek over the Phantom Mountain range and into the belly of the mountain.

With a sigh, her secondary form melted away, and she turned to face the others. "Stand up, Jackie." she said, hooking her arm under the red head and pulling her to a stand. "I am sorry." her eyes drew to Ulric as she uttered the apology, for she knew this was not the first time her anger had caused him undue anxiety.

"You, Divé Oči." Logan jutted a finger in Timothy's direction and began to walk that way.

"The flute - I gave to the bison-people to trade for Levi and Theo. You know something about that flute, ah? You heard the song too.." she said nonchalantly, as if bison-people need no more explanation.

Now Bianca blinked. Bison people? Did Logan hit her head, too?

"Jackie, did you not wonder - it was not strange to you when we found the bison cow in the mountains? Bison, do not roam in this place.. you saw the creature that attacked Timothy." Logan said, in her usual broken English.

Now Bianca looked to Jackie to see if she had a response, and wondered-but doubted- if at present, Logan had distracted her.

Over the open landscape, a light blue truck was making its way down the country roads. The familiar sights were a comfort for the driver, who had a bright smile on her face, after all, she had been away from her ranch far too long. The rancher was thrilled to be back, and after her time spent up in the city, there was no other place she'd rather be. Maybe she'd light the lamp on her porch again, for old time's sake.

Zeit had not planned for an unexpected departure, the pack was still new, and she couldn't be sure she could trust that her lively hood would survive with the new wolves. But after receiving an urgent letter from her maternal grandmother, she had alerted Kratos and left with great haste. While her grandmother was human, she was one of the few people aware of Zeit's true nature. The woman had not trusted her father right away, only swaying when she saw how much Zeit's parents had truly cared for each other. Her grandmother was also the one to help raise Zeit, and had been there for her after her father had passed on.

The letter had entailed her grandmother was very ill, and wanted to see her granddaughter in case the worst happened. Zeit had ended up staying on her grandmother's estate longer then planned, but after informing Kratos, she stayed with her grandmother and helped around the estate, only leaving when the elderly woman practically pushed her out, knowing the wolf needed to return to her home once more. At least her grandmother had packed various treats she had baked and a few items she had made for Zeit as gifts before setting the rancher back on the path home.

Zeit was relieved to See the sight of her ranch, humming along to the music playing on the radio until she saw something out of the ordinary. She picked up speed going down the long driveway, practically screeching to a stop to park and hurriedly getting out. Her once cheerful mood was soured, and she could a headache brewing already.

"What in the devil is going on here?" she said rather forcefully, stomping up the the men on her property with a glare. "I haven't been gone THAT long, so I want an explanation" she added sharply, piercing gaze falling onto the officers as she crossed her arms, looking for a response. First, she'd deal with Officer Hughes, then she'd handle the other two. And maybe spray Kratos with a hose before he tracked any dirt onto her porch.

Jackie said nothing. In her mind was a dark pit - an infinite blackness that held all manners of despair. Sometimes she could avoid it. Sometimes she could outrun it. Today she could do neither, and briefly, she had shared it. Yet as Bianca entered the scene, she could feel the barrier closing to seal the darkness in again.  Never had she asked to be understood. How could she be? There was a blackness that lived inside of her, a thing she alone carried that none could comprehend.

Bianca spoke of her own darkness, and Ulric's. She did not deny it existed. Yet just as her own could not be understood, she could not understand Bianca’s. They were separate entities, disjointed, a thing which seperated people from one another.

No one understood. He would kill her sister, if it would hurt her. And it would - a new shade of blackness to that which already lived inside of her.  There was but one answer.

Logan’s had was accepted as it was offered, though with a robotic reluctance. As she shifted weight back onto her feet, she found them weak like a newborn lamb’s. She steadied herself briefly to Logan’s shoulder.  As the woman uttered her question of the bison, she found her own thoughts sluggish to the query. So she shrugged half-heartedly, either unwilling or unable to offer a thought on the matter.

The younger Officer, which Officer Hughes had told to watch Kratos and Officer Owen, stood by the cabin as Zeit pulled up and demanded an explanation. The Officers face paled only slightly but he stood firmly, ready to do his job.

" Are you the owner of this ranch, Zeit Chandler?" He asked approaching her with as much confidence he could muster, but his face was still a little pale. " I'm Officer Smith. We're here investigating a missing person report- he was last seen heading towards these mountains, so we were checking your property to see if he had ended up hiding out here. We shouldn't be long though, or.. I don't think we should be at least."

As his voice trailed off, his eyes drifted somewhere away from Zeit's gaze. So much for confidence.

" Phantom flowers?" Officer Ferris questioned, his eyes narrowing on Toby. " What is that?"

Officer Owen listened to Kratos. " Our dogs are well trained, they won't attack the live stock. Are you're dogs not trained to know the difference between what's threating the live stock and what isn't?"

"Last time I checked, searching people's lands required something called a search warrant or my permission? And you sure as hell haven't even asked for my permission on anything" she replied, crossing her arms as she continued to glare, clearly in a very foul mood now.

"Y'all can give ME the description and I'll call ya if I see 'em or something suspicious, no need for you to waste your resources hunting up here" she added, very firmly, "And call back you damn hounds, my livestock might be known for being 'bombproof,' but riling up the cattle is the last thing you wanna do. Hell, Ol'Betsy has taken out a coyote or two in her time alone, don't want ya to end up with a hurt dog and time wasted where you could be looking elsewhere."

"Unless, for some reason, you have any kind of evidence to be looking here y'all need to vacate the property," she continued, almost daring the officer to try her, "and here say from the local gossip is not evidence."
