Werewolves (RP15) The Waking Dawn

PreviousPage 14 of 32Next

" Oh, okay," was all Matthew said. He turned slightly to look back from where they came a moment ago before turning back, feeling it rude to walk off first. So instead he awkwardly stood, waiting desperately for the encounter to end of it's own natural accord.

… but it had. By the time Matthew looked back, like a phantom, the strange girl with hallow, blue eyes was gone.

Matthew glanced around for Marie but she was no where to be found. He turned and started heading off the mountain himself as well.

Something flashed through Sabrina's eyes that was less than pleasant. Possibly a little irritation of her own. Possibly murder. Whatever it was, it was gone in a moment, like the yellow glint of animal eyes on the roadside at night.

"Well," she said, ghosting a smile, "Maybe you'll get lucky again."

She drew a few small pouches from the sling bag she always seemed to be wearing, except that once when he'd caught her doing yoga. She set them on the nightstand by his bed where the food was. From them she drew various powders; white, golden yellow, red... mixed them together in a glass with a few swallows of water.

"Here," she said, offering it to him.

And the glass of orange juice she'd brought. "Chase it with this. It'll help with the taste."

"Actually, I have a question." Bianca changed her tone and spoke again before Levi and Theo had a chance to respond. She stood and walked to the table, taking along with the boys. She examined their faces and noted that Timothy was still within hearing distance, more likely than not.

"You.." she pointed to Theo, with a small tilt of her head. "Do you remember, right before I came to the pack...?" she asked, then quickly elaborated, "I was in town, and I met this woman named Jenn.. Peters? I was there with another loner. There was a Tammy there, too." she recalled the events in pieces, for she had put it out of her mind until now. It was one of her sources of anxiety.  "Along with Ulric, Timothy and Jackie, who seemed like she had blood lust at the time.."

She recalled it in pieces. "What happened that night? Why were Jackie and Timothy after Toby?" she narrowed her eyes, "And - don't the townspeople know about werewolves? Jenn saw everything. Tammy, too, I think. She knows where the ranch is. I know that's why Kratos brought us into the mountains - but, that seems like a band-aid.. sorry, I'm thinking out loud again. But, doesn't anyone get the sense that this probably isn't a good place for us to stay anymore? Maybe that's why I'm so uneasy here. You guys are the only family I have besides my grandparents, and everything seems so uncertain right now. I'm sorry if I seem anxious - it's because I am, and I feel like I only know a fraction of the history here."

With a quiet shake of his head and motion of his hand, Officer Owen refused Kratos hand that was offered. " That's alright," he said.

" We're here looking for a missing person who's suspected to be in some trouble with a gang, maybe even apart of one himself. The last that was heard of him suggested he came up this mountain only a couple days ago. Have you seen anyone from out of town around here lately?"

_______________

Officer Hughes and the other police parked next to the cabin of Ziet's ranch, as they stepped out of their cars. Several dogs were dispatched onto the scene with their partner officers behind them. Thanks to Saber's backpack left at the local jail, all dogs had something to track his scent with. As they spread out to check all the corners of the ranch to any leads, Officer Hughes watched Kratos, Toby and the other Officers.

" He was smart to take two other Officers with him," he commented seemingly to himself but another officer nearby heard and looked towards Officer Owen and the group outside the gate. " Yeah, that man is... Just terrifyingly tall, and large. I mean, look at him..." The younger Officer said.

" But he didn't bring enough men with him," Officer Hughes continued. The younger Officer looked towards Hughes worried. " ...What do you mean?"

Officer Hughes turned around and started toward the cabin to check it out. " Watch them, just in case," he told the younger Officer. The young man looked anxious now, but did as he was told and turned, watching Officer Owen and Kratos by the gate.

It wasn't natural, that man's height. Officer Hughes may of not been able to smell Kratos' scent, but by his own hunch he already suspected he had crossed paths with what would be only the first werewolf on that blasted mountain; And by the man's stature, he could only assume that had to be the alpha of the pack.

'Sam' lowered his chin and listened carefully. His hands came to rest on the hilt of the pickaxe propped up at his feet.

"No, I don't think that we have." He replied. The sound and odor of dogs brought his attention around. He counted them and briefly met eyes with Officer Hugh across the way. Then he casually returned to face Officer Owen.

"Has he killed someone?"

****

Ulric measured the weight of Jackie's words. His countenance did not improve.
"Logan's right." He said at last. "Let's go in and talk to everyone. We need to know everything."

Officer Owen shook his head. " No, as far as we're aware of at least. It's best to assume he's dangerous though- he's got quite a bit of a reputation for risky behavior. He's Asian American, short, very thin and frail of health. He's also got red highlights on his bangs, though those might be faded now for how long he's been missing. Have you seen anyone by the description?"

"No, sir," Sam answered, "But we will keep our eyes open."

"In the meantime," the foreman indicated out at the field, "Will you call your hounds back? We have guard dogs on the property trained to kill the feral dogs and coyotes that harass our calves."

"Dogs aren't gonna find anything anyway. The mountain is covered with Phantom Flowers." Toby put in absent-mindedly, then quickly bit his lower lip. His thoughts had wandered back to what Granny had told him and Zander, he'd spoken without actually thinking about it! "N-Not that Zeit has got any Phantom Flowers on her farm, I'm sure the cows would've-- Uh! Yeah! --The perfectly normal and mammalian cows would've eaten them all if they grew down here. Ha! You know that--Or you should--Or you would if you lived around here. Heh." He put in quickly and clumsily, ending with an awkward rub of his neck and avoiding eye contact.
