Werewolves (RP 9): The Song of the Mountain - Part 1

Bianca wasted no time in taking up beside the Alpha. She also didn't miss an opportunity to pace against the side of him opposite the wind, though it did little to defend her against the rain that sunk right to her bones. She kept her face low and her ears back,
"Where are we going?" she asked, looking up at him with her eyes all but shut against the assault of the rain.
---
Why did Logan take up her path in the direction she had seen Timothy flee? Maybe because she had seen it- that look of fear in his eyes right before he was gone off the cliff-side. He looked vulnerable, human, if only for the span of a breath. She had kept up a steady pace for some time, but began to slow as the rain beat down on her back. Dense clouds escaped her mouth and nose as she tried to discern her location through the thick silvery sheets of rain in the darkness of the night.
Throwing a wistful gaze over her shoulder, she lowered her head and continued forward.
"Timothy...!"

Storms need not descend upon the mountain's height. They merely roll between the trees and lick the earth. Thus it was that the breeze grew stronger, faster, and stronger still, until it carried with it the bite of rain and obscuring mist of cloud.
There was silence, and then there was noise. The transition was so gradual it could almost not be felt, and yet the rate of speed by which tranquility became chaos was astounding--the storm had engulfed the forest! Trees that were still suddenly were thrashed about violently. Limbs were torn, leaves scattered! The wind howled, it screamed! Thunder over head roared! Icy rain pelted rock, tree, and dashed to pieces soft-leafed ferns!
In the midst of it, the white wolf stood. She came to Saber and more like a great dragon than a wolf and she surrounded him with her warmth and fur to shield him from the storm until the moonrise could bring to him his own strength.

It wasn't long after the rain began to descend that Saber was soaking wet. Even if he was able to hide the fact he was feeling a bit cold as the night drew on, there was no way he could do so now. His whole body was shivering terribly. His eyes fluttered back the assaulting rain as he tried to watch Sabrina approach.
“ ..What are you doing...?” He spoke the words through chattering teeth as Sabrina made her way around him, wrapping him up in her warm fur. He didn't move at all though, he simply closed his eyes as any part of her fur approached his face, wincing as if it could hurt him. After she was done, he gave Sabrina a quick glance indicating how much he disapproved of her closeness, but he never made a move to get away from her. Instead he stood there miserably in the icy rain, now with a huge white bundle of fur wrapped around him.
A moment past as the odd scene continued. Saber was starting to feel a little bit warmer thanks to Sabrina, but he was still shivering. Unfortunately Sabrina couldn't cover him completely, and the parts still exposed to the weather slowly began to feel like icicles. Saber's face grew red from the cold constantly nipping at it. He drew in a ragged breath as he finally spoke, talking loudly so he could be heard over the storm. “ Do you have some place we could go to get out of the storm? Seriously, I'm gonna get hypothermia out here…”

Ulric followed Jackie away from the cave entrance. Naturally, for fear of the ledge he resisted its direction, nonetheless his movements were more or less trusting. When he was allowed again to lay down again, he put himself flat on his back and rested his head on the rocks.
Jackie's discernment was unexpected.
"Oh," Ulric muttered, smiling in vain to the darkness. "I'm alright. I just hit my head on something, is all. "
Ulric's heart sank a little being attuned to honesty. Disparaging to any degree felt like a lie, thus compelled further he explained, "I must've hit the ground pretty hard. I don't know how long I was down there."
Ulric rubbed his bleeding forehead again and long pressed his aching eyes.
"Boy," He sighed at length and let his hand fall. "I sure wish I knew something about the pack that lived here before. The Stone Arch, or Stone Door pack.. I guess that must've been Toby's family from a long time ago. I wonder why they don't live here anymore."
Ulric paused, listening to the rain and wind outside. It was perfect chaos and black as pitch out there. He shivered a little, wondering what would happen when the moon reached its peak. The little cave was barely big enough for a human to squeeze through.
"Jackie..." He spoke again after a moment. A short silence followed as Ulric tried to gather his thoughts.
"After you were released from the hospital..." He said slowly. "I went back, before they cleaned the room, and found a note in the trash container... "
"Jackie, who was the man that came to see you that day?"

Toby watched Theo carefully as he followed the instruction. He wasn't too pleased with the scratchiness of the feed, but they were pressured for time so it would have to do for now.
"Yup, just like that." Toby replied, pushing the button on his own device so as to send the message back through Theo's. He then proceeded to follow Theo in whichever direction the latter was going.

Kratos saw the clouds come. It came down from the mountain as a thick black wall. The trees vanished one by one. Soon nothing but the ground remained. Wind threw off every step. Rain pelted and stung every muscle. Now, there was no visibility. Given any one weather condition, continuing to progress up the mountain would be exhausting and difficult, but all of them together made it a perilous impossibility. Kratos knew he would not be able to reach the rest of the pack on the heights.
As the noise of the rain drowned out the sound, Kratos' great paw reached out and caught Bianca firmly over her shoulders. Then, against the upheaval of the wind, he pulled her to his chest and wrapped his arms around her. Under Kratos' heavy crimson cloak Bianca was completely concealed.
There was no way to see through the heavy mists of darkness that surrounded them, and they could not go far into the winds that threatened to push them down the mountain. Kratos reached blindly for a tree and found a dell of thick roots to put his back against. Then he sat down under dell and covered his head beneath his cloak. The rain could not penetrate the cloth that composed it, but the air was thick and musky in the makeshift shelter. Nonetheless, it was far warmer inside than outside.
******
On the other side of the mountains the storm was already raging in full wrath...
Somewhere in the thrashing trees and cracking branches, Logan searched through a cloud of darkness and rain. Thunder was shaking the sky! The ground had become pudding under her feet as torrents of rainwater rushed down from the heights. Rivers and streams were rising at a furious pace. The wind pushing against her legs and hands had the strength of a giant. No path could be walked in a straight line. Yet somewhere along the way, stumbling through it all, Logan stepped in a thick muddy mixture with a definitive metallic scent.

Logan's fur clung tightly to her muscles, every trembling movement against the wind pronounced beneath her coat. To continue was seemingly without purpose, as this night promised no good outcome, but to stop would be damning.
Trudging through thick mud and rainwater, she was all but toppled beneath the torrents. Though her pace was slowed by the elements, she continued on steadily, until she came to a notable scent beneath her feet. She breathed a long draw of air from the murky puddle, and immediately began to search for its source, following it starting at the area beneath her feet...

As Ulric spoke, Jackie gazed distantly at the raging storms. Even with their refuge, she could feel the prickle of the warmth-stealing wind, the wheezing, moaning cry of the savage air, and the cold of the water which splashed inside. In the face of merciless nature, there was a security to be found in the cave. Dark, looming, and enclosing in all directions — where once it had seemed hungry to suck them in further, in the heart of the storm, it was almost welcoming. Yet, like Ulric, she couldn’t help but wonder if her opinion on their new "home" might change once the moon was at its peak. To accommadate Ulric, her feet had been pushed dangerously close to the gaping void of the crevice.
In her distant silence, it seemed as though she had stopped listening altogether. Yet as Ulric’s final words settled, her bright eyes flashed to Ulric. Lightning crackled; for an instant her illuminated face seemed all the more wild, yet afraid too, like a cornered animal.
"I don’t know," she said at last. It was not a lie, yet the full weight of the truth seemed to lurk behind those words. Was it the storm that raged, or her own heartbeat? She broke eye contact, settling to the stones beneath her palms.
"Why were you in that cave?"
---
Theo’s misgivings on the gadget in his ear was replaced by a pressing concern for the storm. It had descended upon them so quickly, he feared there was little time left to react. Realizing Toby had been waiting for his lead, he hesitated only a half a moment longer, before taking to his other form and rapidly negotiating the terrain.
Was it safer ground he sought or his pack? He didn’t know. Maybe Toby had a better idea.
Just as he thought about asking Toby about it, he suddenly heard a cry in the woods. A girl’s cry? Yet in the storm was already drowning out most sound in his ears, he could feel the doubt worming it’s way in.
"Did you hear that?"

Battling the elements was a fight that could only conclude one way, and soon the greatest element in the battle would administer her strength to both opponents; those who clung to the earth as well as the torrents beneath the starry sky. But as yet she was not seen, only felt... like an itch in the marrow of the bone that could not be reached.

Kratos' forearms, though covered in thick, soft fur, were as beams of iron against the tempest. The storm lambasted the cloak against his paws, but the crimsons seams withstood every lashing. The shelter, though a makeshift one, was strikingly able to resist the torrents of rain and wind that tore branches from trees and sent boulders cascading down the mountain. Kratos could hear it. The chaos on the heights was a trepidation even great hearts were worn to bear. His hope was that the tree under whose roots he had taken refuge was not a shallow pine.

Ulric sensed a surge of emotions race through his friend. It wasn't something he could understand or describe. It was simply a sense for the deeper meaning behind very few words, but something else inside him seemed to know how to interpret it better than his conscious mind. Nonetheless, Ulric let the matter alone.
"I was just..." He paused, "Being dumb."
It wasn't a lie. Considering who he was talking to, this part of the truth sounded better than the good reasons he had for his actions, but the irony was terrible.
"Timothy came in here, and I was following him." Ulric explained. "But I, uh, couldn't see the drop."
Far was it from Ulric's nature to conceal his weaknesses even to spare his pride. So, let the truth be out and consequences be reaped, but he wouldn't cave to it.
'Cave indeed,' he thought to himself, trying once more to avail any sight of the stones over his head. Then said aloud, "Do you think if we strike two stones together we might get some light in here?"

The mud under Logan's feet fled her weight and there was a crash higher on the slope. Suddenly a river broke loose behind her, carrying with it logs and stony debris!

Bianca buried herself against the Alpha. The shelter kept her body warm, for the most part, but her heart remained cold with fear for her companions who were scattered on the mountainside, and she shivered in concern and despair, keeping her head tucked into the Alpha's chest and her fists pressed against it in tight balls.
"I can't do it," she began to repeat, over and over, her voice washed out by the torrents. "I can't lose them," she repeated also, dozens of times, curling up tighter, if it was possible, against the Alpha. "I'm not strong enough," she said, over and over and over, until she was breathless from the words and sobs that wet the fur of her cheeks and the Alpha's chest. Her head shook in disbelief and her hands curled so tightly her nails dug into her palms. Faces from the past appeared in her mind and brought with them remembrance of pain and grievance she thought had long been buried, and when the sobbing came to a halt, it was replaced with short, rapid breaths as panic gripped tighter still.
---
Logan paused in her search for the source of the scent and liquid, and looked over her shoulder. She stood at her full height and her first instinct was to run forward- but quickly she grew wiser and instead moved to the side- as quickly as the liquid beneath her feet would allow. She had scarcely caught the bark of a thick tree in her claws when the water rushed at her feet, then her knees, and then was up to her torso.
The biting cold threatened to paralyze her, but she used every muscle in her arms and shoulders to pull herself further up against the tree. However... the tree would not bear the strength of the tide and the weight of Logan's body and with a series of cracks, became uprooted and would shortly join the others in their journey down the mountains back!
