Werewolves (RP 9): The Song of the Mountain - Part 1

"Are," she enunciated severely, a soft growl just in her throat. "Not who you were. Like it or not, who you were died the night you were attacked. You can't go back. Only forward. The sooner you make peace with that, the sooner your wolf will submit to your man. Is that understood?"

“ You really don’t think there’s anything wrong with your kind turning someone, do you?” Saber said coldly, a deadly anger beginning to burn in his eyes. “ After all, your kind isn't doing anything to prevent this from happening over and over, now are they? Oh, but I suppose you are; You live in the mountains where you won't hurt anyone, who cares what the rest of your kind is doing. This is just a part of the circle of life for your kind, isn't it? Who cares what human lives you've ruined and what more your kind will continue to ruin. You just don't give a dang, do you?” Saber spite the words out like they were venom, able to inflict damage on the listener. He still had more to say on the tip of his tongue, but instead of continuing just yet, he roughly breathed as he waited for Sabrina's retaliation to his accusations.

The Alpha's hot breath fell on Bianca's hand and perhaps there was a smile in those intelligent eyes, but then he moved away from her and set his paws again on the earth.
"The others have climbed higher on the mountain." Said he, "With this storm, I begin to wonder if they possess an ounce of common sense. We must rally them, but we must do so without voice."
Kratos' gaze turned in a southern direction, down the mountain. His brow furrowed in deep contemplation. The wind was rushing from the heights in ever greater torrents. No scent from the bottom of the mountain would reach the top, and any intruder in that direction would be hidden. Meanwhile, all over the mountain, the leaves of the phantom herb were quivering. Soon, the cloak of the phantom would spread from the heights to the foothills, and no scent in the forest would be traceable. Without sound or scent, how were the werewolves to find each other?
"Come." Kratos said to Bianca, turning up the mountain and passing through the swirling mists.

Ulric breathed deeply and reached around above his head. He could smell the rabbits the rope once ensnared, and he tried to find the end in the darkness.
"Am I close?" Ulric said, furrowing his brow and widening his search. At last he felt something brush just over his fingertips.
"Alright, I have it Jackie. Is it tied to something?"

There was an icy patience in her eyes. She waited, listening intently, as his fury took the form of words he shot rapid fire, as if they had the power to draw blood. She sat down on her haunches and laid her tail out to her side, like a cat. When he paused, panting, she blinked slowly. She stretched her neck and lowered her head, so that her eyes were level with his, inches from his face.
"Tell me," she challenged. "Tell him, your attacker, just what we did to you."

Saber’s eyes narrowed, unfazed by Sabrina's closeness. “ This isn't about me, this is about how your kind is going around ruining people's lives like it doesn't matter.” He said quick and bitterly. “ Is any of your kind doing anything to prevent it? Or are you all just too busy watching your numbers grow to care? ”

"I could tell you what you want to hear," she said. "But that's not going to help you, is it?" She huffed in his face through her nostrils.
"So let me tell you about your attacker. I'll bet on the 80% chance he's like you in this way--he's alone. Someone did this to him. His internal drive, the wolf, hates being alone. Instinctually, he attacks with just as much drive to kill from his frustration as to gain company. That's what the wolf wants, whether he is consciously aware of that or not. It wants companionship. That's why rogues are so contagious. They have no training, no direction, so they go where they will, killing and turning haphazardly. Some are more prolific than others. It's wrong and someone has to put a stop to it. You're right. Let me assure you, all rogues are dealt with, one way or another. Were it not so, there would be more wolves than man in this world."
She stood again, her lips curled in a snarl. "You don't know me, Saber," she said seriously. "You cannot hike up a mountain, look me in the eye, and pretend you know my world or where I have come from, what I do. Would it appease you to know that what happened to you was a freak accident? That such is my duty to prevent? I do take personal responsibility for what happened to you. I do. Does that make you feel better?"
"The intricacies of my world are for you to learn. A taste of it has brought you here. Do not presume to know everything, or you won't get very far." There was meaning in her voice.

Silence hung in the air for a moment, as if Saber was digesting Sabrina's words. Then he spoke, his anger finally mellowing out a bit.“ Maybe I don't know everything, but I do know there's a problem here. It's not fair for the humans to have a threat like your kind living amongst them without their knowledge of such.” He said seriously.
“ So tell me, what would be the worse case scenario if humans knew werewolves existed? Would it really be that bad? The werewolves clearly are the stronger race, what could you possibly fear from the humans knowing about you? War? Rejection? Isolation? Like you said, I don't know, so go ahead- Educate me on the matter.”

"They knew," she growled. "Centuries ago, they knew. Where do you think the legends come from? Three hundred years ago, werewolves weren't legend, They were fact. And who did that help?" she barked. "Who did that help? What do the legends say? You hear of towns decimated by wolves, and hunters trained specifically to kill us. Our kind was nearly driven to extinction--not just rogues. Mothers. Fathers. Children. Stronger race? Back then they only had traps and rifles. Now they have laboratories, militia, internet. In less than an hour you'll be a three hundred some odd pound version of yourself, with claws and teeth. See how much stronger you feel when you're wrapped from head to toe in a steel net with an AK-14 pointed at you."
The fur on the back of her neck and base of her tail bristled. "Look around you! Man pines and debates and murders and hates based on differences so small as skin tone! Go ahead, tell him about the beasts that walk among him! Shout it from the rooftops!"
She scoffed and tossed her head. "So much between our peoples relies on a status quo. We must not shift the status quo, for the benefit of all. There will always be casualties, Saber. Always. Both sides. But they are kept small by virtue of the secret. Open the door and you open the floodgates for massacres. Werewolf hunters are also more than mere legend, specialized hunters who know full well they shed human blood when they shoot us down. Who hang our skins on their walls. They know we're human. Of all people, the hunters know more about us than anyone. Does that stop them? No."
She looked at him, penetratingly, seriously. "But it's not just my kind we protect with secrecy. It's theirs too. There are wolves--whole, organized, legal packs--who are held at bay from ravaging those people only by virtue of keeping the secret. If there was nothing to hide, they wouldn't."

Toby watched Theo a moment. Uhh-- Here, just.. uhm. Clumsily, he reached out his hand to help his friend adjust the earphone so that it would stay in place; this involved a complete turn of the device as Theo was holding it the wrong way, but Toby didn't say anything. Awkward at touching another human being without permission, Toby fumbled a bit, but eventually fit the phone snugly in Theo's ear.
It--uh.. It won't fall out, even if you get jostled in wolf form. He said, stepping back and fitting his own earpiece. As he did so, his fingers brushed the unsightly hole near the antihelical fold of his ear. Suddenly he felt sick. The memory of the pain; a bullet hole in his ear, his stomach and in his leg..
He didn't want tonight to happen. He was scared.

Saber stared at Sabrina seriously, all his anger drained out of him now. “ I get it, so the humans aren't the only victims here.” He then looked away, his eyes now drifting over the forest and up at the moon, or where it would've been had the storm clouds not been covering it. “ What a mess.” He muttered, brows furrowed.
He remained silent as he watched the storm blow in, thinking. He turned back to Sabrina. “ Hey, you wouldn't happen to know of some way of knocking out a werewolf, would you?” He asked casually. “ I don't think I'm going to be able to control it this time… Last time I got lucky, I really don't expect it to happen again.”
