Werewolves (RP 9): The Song of the Mountain - Part 1

Saber’s eyes slowly drifted back to looking at Sabrina, something subtly changing in his expression. Saber scoffed. “ Alive. ...Last time I saw it anyways. Who knows what’s happened to it now.”

Kaqurei

"Mmm," she hummed. "That's also... useful."

She shrugged. "The reason it matters, is this. One who is born a wolf gain the traits of their parents. Say her father had steel grey fur. Say her mother had a temper. She would inherit these things naturally, seamlessly during conception and know herself fully as she comes of age. In your case, it's different. The traits of your wolf shall be directly inherited from your attacker. This brings a conflict of natural inclinations, your own, what you are used to, and those of the one that attacked you. But, and remember this, both sides, man and wolf, are you. You are the one who must make the choices. Your wolf, as the one who attacked you, may be naturally inclined to violence, while you yourself are more peaceable. This is the conflict, do you understand? Perhaps not those traits specifically, but the concept is the same. You are at war within yourself, your natural traits and abilities against those which were inflicted upon you, foreign to you. Your mind and body are not used to it. Yet. But the human body has a remarkable ability to adapt."

She paused a moment, as a breeze began to pick up. She could feel on her skin the breath of coming rain, taste in the air the tension of a coming storm.

"We do not have much time before the change," she said seriously. "With time, and learning, so long as you do not fear it, do not fight it, but learn it and tame it, you will gain peace and control." She was speaking quickly now. "For some, it helps to think of the wolf as a separate entity they must control. For others, that is the worst thing they can do--it feeds their fear that the wolf is more powerful than they are. The wolf is you. It only has much power as you give it."

She stepped back, looking at him intensely. "This is not something that can be learned in one night, but I need to know something: do you trust me?" And she extended her hand, offering it to him.

Heavy footfalls were in the wake of Bianca's tread, racing down the mountain behind her!

While sitting in the darkness, trembling and feeling alone, Ulric thought he heard a faint voice on the wind outside. The wind continued to howl over the passage door, so it was hard to say if he actually heard a voice or not. Nonetheless, hope however small was worth the enterprise.

"Hello?" Ulric called as loudly as he dared, and then perchance he lose the only opportunity for rescue, he got on his feet and cupped his hands to his mouth. "Is anyone there!"

Ulric's heart was pounding as he listened.

*****

Bianca's pursuer ran faster and faster at her heels!

*****

Logan's near-fall frightened Timothy. He jolted in a half-step, but whether it was to save Logan or flee from her, not even he knew.

All too suddenly the wind on the peak picked up, and then a flash lit the air followed by a thunderous clap that reverberated over the heights!

Timothy flinched in fear and vanished off the path!

*****

"Bianca, stop!" The Alpha's great voice bellowed at her back.

Continuing to run, never looking back, knowing the creature had taken up chase but never confirming it, Bianca pressed forward until she thought her lungs would give out and her heart would stop! She bounded over thickets and branches, until the booming sound of the Alpha's voice caused her to jump again! This time, she came to a halt instead of running. Her limbs were like jello beneath her, and she took to the ground, laying in a hapless pile of gold fur and looking towards the Alpha, muttering under her breath between her panting desperately for air.

"....thoughtyouwereamonster... I'msorry... wassoscared..Iwasgonnadie..."

She slowly picked herself off the ground, although her legs still wobbled uselessly beneath her, so she rested against a tree.

Logan lurched forward in an instant with eyes wide to see where Timothy was, and full ready to follow after him if it meant any chance at saving his life!

The air pressed heavily against her, almost suffocatingly, like a blanket. The storm seemed to advance all at once, where at first it had been but a distant consideration. The wind moaned and raged in her ears. Jackie considered her precarious position with more care now… yet still she listened intently as the last of her call was eaten by the wind.

There. She heard something, then it was swallowed. Cautiously she advanced towards it. The wind had swiftly devoured almost all of her signs, yet still she looked more intently. That rock, it seemed misplaced didn’t it? As though a person had stumbled there? As she approached, she thought she could see a small crevice yawning out before her.

She cupped her hands, leaned forward, and sent her voice tumbling down, "Anyone there?"

Theo’s voice stumbled, perhaps in no small part due to the darkening clouds.

"O-oh… that’s a lot," he answered politely, still trying to recall what came after Logan being poisoned.

He couldn’t help it. He didn’t want to be rude, but long monologues had a tendency to stick in his brain and not trickle down until a good while later. And still some of it would get lost along the way ! At the very least, he did better paying attention to direct questions.

"Uh… both my parents are werewolves," and then glanced uncertainly at the storm, "I think you better hurry".

Oh, then you're a pure blood-- Or a second generation wolf at least. Toby said, adjusting his glasses as he looked at Theo. He hadn't really expected anything per say-- At least, nothing about Theo gave Toby any predetermined notions, but for some reason, learning Theo had wolves in his family was surprising.

Whatever Toby was leading up to in his conversation with Theo was lost as a rumble of thunder brought the omega's attention to the sky. The wind began to pick up and the clouds were darkening... Great. Just great. .. OF COURSE!! Curse the fickle fates that hate him so much!

Quickly, Toby retrieved the device from his pocket and offered it to Theo. Here. Put this in your ear. It should fit comfortably in both wolf form and human form-- Hopefully Kratos doesn't have any objections. Do you know if he's okay with technology in his pack? Some wolves would consider this kind of stuff a form of desecration to our heritage, but it doesn't hurt to be a modern wolf pack if the Alpha is okay with it, right?.. Normally I'd ask him first, and test the devices until they were perfect, but I get the feeling that we're gonna want them if we don't have them tonight. Having thus said, Toby also retrieved an ear device for himself. The reception is a little static-y and it'll whine if someone speaks too loudly. I'll work out the kinks tomorrow if we survive tonight... Help me find the others and dish these out, okay?

Toby reached into his suitcase and grabbed a handful more of the ear devices, giving them to Theo.

Kratos stared down at the hapless Bianca with the same gold eyes that sent her running. It seemed he was not out of breath, but keeping up with Bianca at an adrenaline-induced sprint had been a challenge.

Kratos offered his massive black paw to help steady Bianca. He looked back up the mountain from whence they came.
"It's easy to become afraid when you are alone," said he. "But you must never run. The moment you run you are prey."

He looked at Bianca again and there was something strange and ominous in his bright eyes. "Do not howl again, unless you are certain of the need." He said, and his ears swiveled to the south. "Something is amiss on the mountain tonight. Secrecy would be in our favor."

The moment Timothy's paws left the trail rocks began falling. One stone jolted loose caused other stones to slip. Soon a cascade of rocks and boulders tumbled in a free-fall down the mountain and ricocheted into the trees below! How Timothy navigating the landslide, none could say, nor if he were harmed in the process, for by the time Logan looked over the ledge the dust was already settling and his tail disappeared into the woods.

As the dust was swept away by the wind and the air over the collapsed section of Dead-Man's Trail cleared, a strange structure was left exposed beneath the rubble. Was it the beam of a house?

"Jackie!" Ulric's heart leapt. "Jackie! Jackie can you hear me!"

Ulric was sure of the voice he heard, and for a moment he might have sought it desperately. As yet, however, he was still uncertain of the ground beneath his feet, and he dared not tempt the mountain a third time.

Saber listened carefully to Sabrina's words. When she paused taking in the breeze of the coming storm, Saber looked up at the full moon. It gleamed brightly as if it itself was fully aware and even excited at the change it was about to bring to him and others like him. Saber took a deep breath as he returned his gaze to Sabrina as she continued to speak. Then she posed her question. He intently looked her over for a moment, as his eyes narrowed.
“ No. But I don't really have much of a choice now, do I.” He said roughly as he briefly glanced at the wind as it rustled the leaves. Saber however made no move to take Sabrina's hand.

Bianca glanced at his eyes and hand and then lurched forward, bypassing the alphas gesture and instead burying her face against his chest, ears pinned back as she listened to his lecture, her heart still pounding, pounding as fast as the mouses' who was caught by the owl.

When the Alpha had stopped talking, she only nodded in response, then stepped back and observed those gold eyes. Then she suddenly raised her hand into a fist as if to strike Kratos in the chest with it, but paused before it made contact, and she held up a finger to his nose instead, "Don't ever do that again."

Now her eyes were drawn to the south as well, as she tried briefly to discern the reason for Kratos' words of caution..

Logan watched the landslide, hopelessly unable to do anything, the breath caught in her throat. She was fully prepared to follow him, bracing herself to see what she might beneath those stones, when she saw the flicker of his tail going into the woods.

Straightening her stance, she exhaled, and that's when she noticed the structure among the rubble. It captured her interest, but there was a dilemma her mind was on right now that prevented her from wondering too long about it. She was trapped on a cliffside with a chasm on one hand and a broken path on the other. Above her, storms stirred and she knew rain, perhaps sleet, would be on them soon. And within, the wolf stirred.

She knew she wasn't as nimble as Timothy-especially right now, on two legs. Her best chance was the way they came, but it would take a leap to reach the other side where the ground was solid. For now, she rested with her back against the cold slab of stone, the wind whistling above her head as it bellowed against the back of the mountain.

Theo looked at the device timidly. He didn’t know if Kratos minded technology much. He didn’t know a lot of things about the alpha. But technology did make him a little bit uneasy. The device looked way too small to do the same thing a several hundred pound werewolf could do. Yet he didn’t want to hurt Toby’s feelings, so he took it and nodded placidly in agreement to whatever Toby had just asked.

He eyed it suspiciously, and after a little hesitation attempted to press a promising end right at his ear. It didn’t stick. He eyed it suspiciously. Maybe it needed more tape.

Jackie tiptoed very carefully a few meters forward to the entrance of the cavd and peered inside. She had no doubt the ground was unstable here. Carefully, she crouched then lay her body flat on the ground with her head facing the cavern. She looked down the shaft.

"Yes. Are you okay?"
