Werewolf Facts & FAQs

THE WEREWOLVES of PHANTOM MOUNTAIN

The story of the werewolves of Phantom Mountain began before 2009 and centered on a unique spin on the concept of werewolves. What these werewolves are, and how they function, is an important part of the story. Throughout the story, we see characters grapple with their abilities and learn life as a werewolf. We see those who are bitten as they come to terms with the loss of a "normal" human life and embrace a part of themselves that seems completely out of control. We also see those who were born werewolves face the task of protecting the "threshold of knowledge" that is their world, both for the sake of humans and werewolves alike. This thread will explain more about this concept of werewolves and how they function, as well as answer questions about them.

THE ANATOMY OF WEREWOLVES:

THE BASICS:
A werewolf's anatomy appears to be partially between that of a human and that of a wolf, with similarities of both and unique variations.

A werewolf only has two natural forms

,

(While he was trapped in a cave with Jackie, Ulric witnessed the onset of a third form toward the end of RP9 "The Song of the Mountain" part 1.)

which are classified as separate only because of their vast differences in appearance. Those forms are the form classified as "human," and the form classified as "werewolf."
When shifting between the two forms there is no "animal" form; The werewolf never appears to be an ordinary wolf. However, the natural human eye and instinct can easily be deceived by it; for instance, a skilled werewolf may disguise itself as a regular wolf by mimicking wolf postures and body-language.

Depending on the situation and individual, the appearance of a werewolf could trick the glimpse of any onlooker. If one knows what they're looking at, however, (as in the example of a trained werewolf hunter) one is not so easily fooled. Even in human form, a werewolf has certain visual traits that are not usually found in regular people; for example, odd hues in the eyes and extreme coarseness in hair. They also have a distinct smell (more commonly picked up by other werewolves, but sometimes discerned by werewolf hunters,) among other revealing traits.

FAQS

Q: What is a werewolf?
A: A werewolf is a human who has inherited a radical genetic anomaly, either by being bitten by a werewolf or being born to one or two werewolf parents. This anomaly effects the person on a molecular level, reorganizing their genetic material to produce a secondary form every full moon, and altering their primary (or primal) form with new physical traits, as well as heightened senses, appetites, and physical ability. This genetic anomaly is classified in the story by many names, including curse, affliction, disease, infection, ability, gift, and race.

Q: How does werewolfism (as opposed to Lycanthropy) spread?
A: Werewolfism spreads by conception or via the blood or saliva of a werewolf during a full moon.

Q: What kinds of werewolves are there?
A: There are three different types of werewolves in the story, each have something to do with how the human inherited their werewolfism. How the werewolf inherited their werewolfism plays a significant role in how much they have control over their secondary form.
The three types are:

  1. A half-breed werewolf is the child of one werewolf parent and one human parent. A curious fact about these types of werewolves is that they possess the most natural control over their primary and secondary form. However, werewolves that are born to a human & werewolf are rare, as such preganancies often terminate early. In such cases as it does succeed, however, it is far more likely if the human parent is male and the werewolf parent is female. A half-breed werewolf inherits their werewolf form from their werewolf parent, with random alterations from their non-werewolf parent, and will begin showing signs of werewolfism in puberty.
  2.  A pure-breed werewolf is the child of two werewolf parents. This type of werewolf has innate full control over their primary form and moderate control over their secondary form. These werewolves inherit their secondary form from their parents, and typically come into it during puberty. They are able to enjoy the full effect of their enhanced senses much more naturally than other werewolves.
  3.  A first-generation werewolf is a human that has been bitten by a werewolf on a full moon night. These werewolves possesses the least control over their secondary form, and can lose control over their primary form to an unfocused range of new senses. First-generation werewolves inherit genetic markers for their secondary form from their attacker when they are attacked by a werewolf. Typically, a deadly fever-inducing infection will set in sometime after the attack, which, if survived, will yield a secondary form on the first full moon night following the attack.

(Technically, a fourth type of werewolf also exists in the story, although they cannot be called "true" werewolves. These are the wolf-born, also called "wolf-bloods", which are humans descended from many generations of full-blood werewolves. These humans are born without a secondary form, but possess in their primary form naturally heightened senses, appetites, and physical ability.)

Q: What is the effect of the full moon on werewolves?
A: All true werewolves, regardless of type, take their secondary shape or form during full moon nights. Although the reason for this has yet to be explained in the story, the full moon is believed to have a psychological as well as physiological effect on the werewolves. A werewolf is also only "contagious" on a full moon night.
