Listening quietly to her Grandmother, Cherise found that something began to prick deeply into her heart. Her Grandmother and cousin were the only ones of their family that stubbornly stayed upon the land of their birth. Rich in their history and proud in their heritage which was founded on it. Her face gently turned towards the mountain again. Was this the call that she felt she must discover? The connection to the place where her ancestors lived, loved, and died.
"New pack?" again Cherise faced her grandmother. "What happened to our family's pack?" Cherise felt a strange feeling rise within her.

"Died or left, didn't I just say that?" The elderly woman asked, peering at her granddaughter from over the tops of her glasses.

Cherise felt her cheeks blush crimson. Nervously she rubbed her hands together and bit her lower lip "Yes, Granny, you did. Forgive me." Breathing deeply she continued "What I meant was, why is there another pack on our ancestral land?"

"Ohohoho, getting possessive of it already, are we?" Granny laughed, a mischievous look in her eye. She was clearly joking. "Well, sweetheart, that's how it works. A good place doesn't stay unclaimed for very long. Even if there's already a pack living there, intruders are constantly trying to come in and claim land or pick off members... That's how it works. The mountain is a phantom that calls to the werewolves, and it doesn't stop just because werewolves already live there.." She said, a strange attitude overtaking her suddenly.
Slowly, the old woman rose from her chair and hobbled to the window. Gazing out at the deep green, and the swirling mists about it. She seemed haunted by the mountain's majesty. After a moment, she looked back at Cherise and smiled, "You're hearing the call now, though you probably don't recognize it... It's the desire to walk up into those hills and loose yourself exploring the forest. That's what the mountain does. It draws you in, and keeps you there.... And you can never know how many wolves are up there with you because of the plant.... You just never know."

Cherise was disappointed in the fact that it worked in that way. Though, she knew her Grandmother was right, for she had seen and read many documentations to know this. In truth, Cherise loved the outdoors and the wildlife. It thrilled a side of her to learn about it or to just be in nature. One reason was her art, but she never felt content just to sit and capture the scene before her, no, she wanted to explore it, run through it, and just experience it all!
As Mrs. Buttermilk made her way to the window, Cherise watched her. Admiring the facial features of the old woman, she noticed her look at the mountain, softly wondered to herself how long it had been since Grandma Buttermilk had been up there. Returning her smile sweetly. Cherise was enchanted with Mrs. Buttermilk's description of the mountain. "Yes! That is exactly how I feel right now." she confirmed. Quickly she stopped and asked "What plant?"

"That one." Granny said, pointing her cane to a strange plant nestled in an orange pot, sitting over the fireplace. Hobbling over, the old woman gingerly removed it from it's position on the mantle piece and offered it to her granddaughter. "Smell it."

Cherise curiously watched her Granny. She smiled softly and leaned over to take in what she believed to be a wonderfully scented plant. What happened next caused poor Cherise to start panicking. She began to feel dizzy. She didn't quite know if she was standing on her feet or her head. In fact, she had no idea if her Grandma was dancing around her in a circle or had left the room. In a moment of alarm, she cried out for her grandmother as a little child would do if she could no longer see her mother in a frighting crowd.

Granny calmly and steadily placed the plant back on the mantle and grabbed her granddaughter's hand. "Alright, alright now. Calm down, you haven't gone anywhere... You took too big a whiff. When I said 'smell it' I expected you to gingerly sniff it like you would in a perfume shop, not take a big gasping inhale.. Calm down now." She said softly, leading the young woman back to her seat.
On the tea table next to the set and the sugar, was another plant potted in a very small glass bottle. This Granny grabbed and placed under her progeny's nose. The smell of peppermint wafting up in protest of the plants movement through the air. "Take a good deep breath. This will reverse the effects."

Cherise clung to Mrs. Buttermilk's hand with both her own. "I'm sorry," came her desperate reply. Trying her best not to trip over her own feet or bump into anything, she followed the guiding voice of her Grandmother. It was very hard, and Cherise felt herself collide with more then one object, but in moments she was sitting on her seat again. Quickly she breathed a deep breath of the mint, and although it sprang up her nose like an overpowering shot, the dizziness began to ware off. "Oui. Cherise rubbed her face with both hands waiting to fully recover. "What is that plant? And what did it do to me?" she asked shakily.

"It confused your wolf sense, to regular humans, it's just a weed that has no smell at all.." Granny replied, carefully placing the peppermint back on the table. Looking back over her shoulder, she gestured to the previous plant with her cane. "It's called the Phantom Plant. It grows all over the mountain. It is what makes the mountain a phantom, because it masks any scent that passes through it, as though nothing ever took that path in the first place.. It's like a blindness for your nose that obscures all information from your knees down to your feet. Usually it doesn't have that dazing effect on you unless you get right up in it and take a deep whiff, like you just did.... That plant, Cherise, is both friend and foe to the werewolves of the mountain. It will hide you from an enemy, but it can just as easily hide your enemy from you."
