Theory of Attraction

Lee heard the girl had followed him out. A piece of him wanted to keep going even after he heard her footsteps stop, but he turned back anyways. Silently he waited for her, feeling awkward once more.

The girl opened the door and advanced a few paces, but there she stopped. The wind played with her short hair, sending it in delicate flips.  The left sleeve of her mother’s hoari dangled loose in the breeze, while her right arm clutched by her chest.  She watched the boy with a strange look in her eyes, one that spoke more of uneasiness of a young girl than the look she had given the boys back in the library.

“It’s a good book,” she said so quietly, it almost might be though the breeze.

Almost, but not entirely, because her expression had changed to match it.  A sort of quiet pleading.  After a few more moments she retreated back towards the shadow of the building.

The girl spoke. She finally spoke. And while that was a bit of a relief for Lee because he was honestly starting to believe she might really be mute, it also threw him for a loop. For some reason it was easier to continue walking off when she hadn't spoken, but what he felt in her eyes and voice had made him stumble.

" I'm gunna read it," he said awkwardly, in hopes to reassure her of his commitment. But what he was to do next did not come to him, and so awkwardly he waited and watched for her cue to give him a clue as to what that might be.

The girl watched Lee a moment, then skirted her eyes to the floor.  For all her intimidation in the library, she looked different outside of it.  Gone was the stony exterior, and in its place was a girl.  She seemed uncomfortable and so desolate, the sleeves of her oversized garment blowing and draping in the wind.  For a moment it seemed she wanted to walk towards him as Lee waited, but something in her stopped… and slowly she peeled back into the security of the library.

Lee watched Ami go back inside as he felt like he handled the situation wrong, but wasn't sure what he could do now. He didn't understand girls normally, and Ami was quite different from the girls he'd met at school. He lingered by the entrance for a moment as he struggled inward deciding what to do. As he saw the two boys still inside he made his choice and turned back and headed away from the library.

-----

Several days later Lee was back in the library once more, this time at one of the tables with his homework sprawled in front of him. He used to do his homework at his school's library but unfortunately the label "nerd" got attached to him very quickly for it and so he abandoned that place for study entirely. But he knew he was still in a public space, and so he would always find the most deserted, tucked away table he could, far from the aisle of books his age would be normally looking at just to be safe.

Right now he stared down at his algebra book, before writing down something on a page of homework next to it. His attention was engrossed in his studies so much that he didn't seem to notice what was happening in the library around him, as he moved on to solving the next problem.

As Lee progressed to the next problem, he may have noticed the scratch of graphite on paper.  It was a soft sound, to be sure, yet when his own hand had stopped writing on his notes, the sound had persisted a few moments more.  Then it would pause as Lee had, as though self-conscious…

The sound seemed to be coming from behind.

Lee didn't notice the subtle sound behind him, and so he continued his homework undisturbed.

The sound continued.  With Lee’s lack of observation, it seemed to further embolden and continue along in the lapses of silence.  The boy would only need look back to find his answer.

It would take a while before Lee paused his own pencil and finally tuned into the sound behind him. The sound of pencil on paper continued without him. Only a second of hesitancy stopped him before he turned his head and found someone behind him, unable to stop himself from jumping a little bit from the surprise.

Two violet eyes peered back at him, a girl’s face poking through the book-case.

She had evidently made herself at home there for a good deal of time.  The books on the shelf had been removed so she had a place to work, a small sheet of paper clutched by the fingertips, pencil in hand.

On closer appearance, it appeared to be Lee’s homework. From the stack of ‘completed’ pages, the girl had removed a few for her own work.
