Sunflowers and Moonmonsters

"They made you do what?" I asked, shuddering. "Never mind. Pleasant folks, your family. Least they didn't dope you up with enough painkillers to knock out a horse. Couldn't tell which way was up for a week."

It didn't matter how it began - but how it ended. Mercy was a wildcard still, and she reminded me of that when she nearly took my paw off along with the eggs.

"You know a lot about this stuff. You think you should go hide while she eats? She seems nervous. Eh... maybe I'll start."

I walked over to the deer. I never cared to eat things that were still warm; had to pretend they were freshly cooked over a fire. Nonetheless... maybe I could make it look appetizing.

Bon appetite.

Mercy watched Robin. It was encouragement that Robin could take the kill from Josh without retaliation. But she wasn't convinced of safety. Mercy was not strong, and she was not fast. She was hungry, desperately hungry, but she wouldn't put her life in jeopardy to satiate that hunger.

“Stay,” I said to Josh with a mouthful of deer, and began to drag it back by the neck towards Mercy.

Mercy watched Robin approach and lowered her head. Her nose began to move about toward the kill. Her tail gave a very brief wag.

Alpha? Parent? Whatever the title, Robin was the one looking out for Mercy. And they who look out for the others are they who lead.

Mercy approached with her head low,  tentatively she tried to snatch and make off with a piece of the kill. She grabbed the deers leg and tugged at it, but she couldnt get a piece off while watching Josh and skittishly attempting to avoid Robin. So she began feverishly nawing on it, to get a piece before Robin got angry.

“Eat,” I said, letting go of the neck. The thing flopped to the ground. I took a step back before resting on my haunches; my ears were back on Josh and I kept my gaze on Mercy.

Mercy looked cautiously at Robin even as Mercy nawed on the deers leg. Then, as Robin took no more, Mercy moved inward on the body. Ever watchful, lest Robin get angry with her, Mercy began pulling at the flesh of the deer and inching, bit by bit, til she could stand over it... and, consequently, guard the kill from Robin.

My eyes and ears were on Mercy now. A growl started low in my chest and came up.

Behave.”

Mercy responded in kind. She pinned back her ears and took up in the most horrible cussing growls that had ever been heard, chomping at the deer faster and harder.

Josh stayed put, perfectly content to watch and even chuckle a bit from a distance.

His live deer struggled, and he adjusted his weight on it until it stopped to rest. "Behave," he said to it, with a stupid grin on his face.

She needed to eat, I knew that.

But she wasn’t running the show, and if she got away with this, there wouldn’t be much she wouldn’t push. I needed to check her attitude.

I stood and the whole of my upper body was rolled forward, with my arms hanging in front of me. I took a step closer and brought my lips up around my mouth.

”I’m not telling you again. Cool it..” my tail up, my voice low-not wolf or dog and not entirely human, either.
