Searching for Something (CA - Saber)

PreviousPage 4 of 12Next

Saber wanted to continue his protest but Jenn was off before he was able to get another word in. He watched her leave the library, letting out low growl of annoyance as he turned back, now left with the choice of either waiting for her to return, or simply leaving.

He chose to wait.

He took Jenn’s suggestion and was napping when she returned.
Normally Saber was a deep sleeper, but after being forced on the streets, it seemed sleep was enjoying keeping itself far away from him. Even when he managed to fall asleep, the littlest of things seemed to wake him. He blamed it on his wolves heightened sense and now the fear it seemed to house of something attacking it while it was vulnerable. So, while he rested the best he could, he wasn’t able to actually sleep much.
He was huddled up right where she left him, face buried in his arms, his consciousness drifting away, but never drifting far.
He heard someone enter the library which drew his consciousness back to him. He wasn’t exactly sure how, maybe it was through smell or just simply the rhythmic steps that were approaching him, but he knew it was Jenn who’d come through the doors.
So, he pulled himself up out of his less than stellar rest, and turned to see her holding out her bag of food she brought. He carefully surveyed the contents of the bag with a solemn look on his face.
“ That’s great, now assuming you actually thought to wash your hands after handling your pistachio filled energy bar before touching any of these things, they should be fine.”
Saber didn’t wait for a response and instead proceeded to grab one of the peaches, examining it carefully in his hands.

Jen laughed and unloaded everything on the table before sitting down.

"I washed everything." She told him reassuringly. "How many times do I have to tell you I'm a nurse?"

Jen was rather pleased that her offering was accepted, but aside from her ever-present smile and peppy attitude, it never showed itself. Now she hoped the young man would get his strength back, and secretly she also hoped his mood would improve. Perhaps now was a good time to bring up one of the most important and neglected details of the conversation.

"So... you haven’t told me your name." The young woman said pleasantly.

After shuffling the fruit in his hands and seeing his skin had no reaction to touching it, he felt satisfied enough of it’s safety and finally took a bite. He let Jenn's question hang in the air for a bit as he savored the flavor of the juicy fruit in his mouth.
“ Just call me Saber.” He answered simply.

At last Jen was gratified for her persistence and happily she accepted the chosen name of her new acquaintance.

"How long have you been in Reknab Bend?" She said, presenting her next question with care. She hadn't forgotten the bruise on the young man's face, nor his pained expressions.

Saber continued to enjoy his peach. He was a bit disinterested in Jenn now that he had some food, but considering she was the reason he even had it in the first place he figured he should repay her in some way. If answering her questions was what she wanted, it was a courtesy he decided he could afford.
“ About a week.”

Jen watched Saber eat with perhaps as much satisfaction as his own. Things were more comfortable now. Saber had his attention on the plump fruit under his nose, and Jen felt confident she had been of some service that day. So, she settled into her chair nicely and grabbed one of the aforementioned fruits for herself.

"So," she said, presently enjoying a peach peaked at perfection. "Where are you staying in town?"

Saber eyed Jenn critically, his attitude subtly changing. He took his time answering again, eyes shifting down at the table as he finally spoke.
“ No where.” He said miserably.

Jen did not understand. It seemed to her that Saber was once again being stubborn with his answer.

"I'm not a stalker, you know." She said with a playful smirk, pulling the stem off her peach. Then with an exaggerated shrug she said, "I couldn't kick down a door if I tried."

Saber growled in frustration as he rolled his eyes at Jenn’s lack of understanding. He glared sharply at her.
“ I mean I’m not staying anywhere.” He huffed.

Jen looked at Saber curiously, then suddenly her eyes lit up.

"Oh," she muttered."You mean the Lawrance Bridge, right? Under the north road?"
