Searching for Something (CA - Saber)

And so it did, for a long time; the woman did not look away.

Such a gaze could be felt, but not ignored. If one hoped the gaze would go away, they hoped in vain, for whereas before Saber might have thought himself invisible, now it was as if there was light nowhere else but on him. Everything else seemed to fade away. Even the words in the book lost their meaning. It was as if they could be read, but not comprehended or internalized. So keen was that gaze as to disrupt every other pattern of thought.

As time drew on, Saber knew waiting for the woman to leave without another word was in vain. He hadn't gone back to reading his book, he had simply been appearing as if he had been while he waited for the woman to dismiss herself from his corner of the library. Since she had decided not to, and that staring at his face was far more important then getting home before dark, it was clear something must be done to be rid of her.
Saber was tired. He wasn't sure what had attracted so much attention from the woman but he decided it didn't matter at the moment, he simply wanted her gone so he could take a nap in peace. His eyes lifted up and gazed straight into hers as he struggled not to sound as tired as he looked.
" Is something wrong miss?"

When Saber finally ventured to meet the woman's gaze, he found that she was no longer there. The cap and scissors were gone. Her little finger-knitted rope was gone. Everything about her was gone. Where had she gone? When did she go? There was no telling.

Saber took a few swift glances around, now finally realizing the woman was gone. He wasn't sure how he missed her leaving, but exhaustion seemed a likely cause. Now alone once more, Saber put his book down and closed his eyes. His weariness far greater than he realized, it easily slipped him into quiet nap.

And so the day passed...

"Sir."

"Sir, we're closing the library now. You'll have to leave."

It was Miss Madeline who woke Saber. She was standing on the other side of the table with her back toward dark windows. The sun had set some time ago, and now only a few of the yellow library lights were still on. Other librarians were near the front desk already prepared to leave and Madeline seemed eager to join them.

Try as she may, Miss Madelines words did not seem to even make Saber stir. He was out, and mere words was clearly not enough to wake him.

Madeline could not be dissuaded. After a long day's work she was tired and hungry. Only one thing sat between her and her own good nights rest. There was nothing else to be done.

"Sir," Madeline said with the gentleness of a cat, then she shook his shoulder to rouse him. "The library is closing."

Saber groaned quietly as he stired a little but did not wake.

Madeline sighed. For one moment she regretted remembering Saber was even here, and pondered on the consequences of locking him in. But she knew her duty must be done, one way or another.

With quick agility and skill, Madeline shoved Saber's shoulder with enough gentle pressure to knock him off balance and send him to the floor.

Saber hit the floor with a nice thud. That seemed to work. In a split second Saber was now jolted awake, panting and heart pounding from whatever his mind was previously experiencing within itself before the interruption. Saber quickly looked around and realized where he was and cursed as he quickly got up off the floor.
