Of Wolves and Women

PreviousPage 2 of 2

Jackie screamed and shouted - not in cries for help, but ones of rage - as she was lifted off the ground as nothing more than an inconvenience. Logan's grip was too sure to be easily loosened so she could only protest.

As she was tossed into the lake, she plopped straight to the bottom. The water went still. Too still... and suddenly, there was a sweep of current at Logan's legs. No sooner than she might have felt it did a tremendous force come from behind to sweep her legs out from under her!

As intended, between the force and the combination of the slippery river stones under feet, her legs gave out beneath her! Unfortunately, the weight of her body was poised to go down on top of Jackie.

As Logan went under the current, she caught hold of Jackie's arm and managed to pull Jackie out of the way of her fall. As soon as she was able, recovered herself and stood, pulling Jackie up out of the water by the arm in the same movement, and holding the redhead away and above the current at arms length by the wrist.

It was hard to tell what was going on behind that violet gaze. There was anger, but lacking malice, and maybe a question, but until Logan spoke, it was always difficult to discern. In this case, she let her thoughts be known.

"You think you are only an animal, ah?" she said, with an iron grip on Jackie's wrist.

She smelled no better wet than she had dry - if anything, the mud and sweat and blood of her past kills seemed to hang closely above the water. She was crouched lowly, as though ready to spring into a second's notice for another attack - held by the arm or no, the rocks remained slippery and it would not pose a difficulty to force Logan to lose her balance.

Her lips twisted to a snarl. What came from them was not the sound of a beast, but as close to as would form in human's word. Which is to say, not a word meant for polite company or indeed amongst many of the Calgathorm pack.

Taking advantage of Logan's grip, she swung her weight forward and twisted her arm along with it! this would leave Logan to either hold on and risk becoming prone, or else to let go entirely.  She was ready to thrash and fight not unlike a large fish caught on a hook, or a crocodile with a gazelle in its maw.

Logan let go of Jackie and watched her disappear under the water again. She started moving back through the river stream to the shallows.

Her body fell easily into the shallow water without the tension of Logan's arm. Her head surfaced but she did not seem rushed to act next. Instead, she watched Logan's retreat towards the bank, her lower torso still entirely submerged in the water.

Logan climbed up on the bank with her hair, pants and shirt streaming with river water. She brushed the wet locks from her face and turned her head to say something, but seemed to change her mind and continued walking.

Jackie sat in the river. Even as Logan left, she did not pull away from it. After a time, she found a place where at its shallowest it was no more than a foot high and laid down upon the smooth curve of the river stones. Her face was propped above the surface and the current ran its fingers through her messy, tangled locks. She lay there, resting - feeling only the coolness of the water all around her, and the smell of dampness.

Perhaps she was no longer a woman. Yet even as a 'beast', the savageness in her felt quiet then. Something which could be soothed, washed away, and smoothed like a stone in the river. Though surely at the first sign of Logan's return, the calmness would submerge and the teeth would return.
