In The Melodies and The Memories (CA - Saber & Ulric)

Lee paused as he noticed the sparrow, now seeming hesitant to move forward lest he scare it. His dark brown eyes turned back towards the backdoor of the house, as he continued to listen for movement. He knew it was too early for his mother to be done with her little visit, but he still worried she would somehow appear through the door now only to discover he’d lost the boy she had explicitly told him to carefully watch. He was sure his mother would be much more angry about it than even the child's caretaker, of which Lee couldn’t help but like feel something was off about the woman…

Lee slowly turned back to look if the sparrow had moved enough to not be disturbed by his movement before continuing, still listening closely to his surroundings.

The bird sat, peering out at Lee with one beady black eye, amid the concourse of thick brown branches. It's own brown speckled body was nearly invisible while nestled under the shadows of the leaves. Perhaps, had Lee's eyes not wandered in the little creature's direction, it might have thought it's disguise had fooled him. But the moment he looked at it, the sparrow bounced deeper into the bramble and truly disappeared.

In the bird’s absence, a pair of small amber eyes were revealed. It was Ulric, sitting quietly on the other side of the bushes, watching Lee with the little astronaut in his hands.

" Ulric," Lee whispered as he noticed the child behind the hedge, worried he might scare the child further if he spoke any louder. He crouched down to try to get a better view of the Ulric, swaying to keep his balance as he tried desperately to not touch the grass with his hands.

" What are you doing, that's not a place to play in." He said, still keeping his voice soft, but his young face was now scrunched up in a mix of dismay and annoyance.

The small amber eyes behind the hedge looked down as the boy fiddled with the borrowed hero.

"Why does your heart sound like that?" he asked in a voice that was so quiet it could scarcely be heard.

Lee barely heard Ulric's voice. " What..?" He asked, unable to decipher the small amounts he did catch.

The little eyes vanished as the boy looked down at the toy astronaut.
“Boom-bluck-bluck… boom.” Ulric muttered solemnly. He repeated the words twice more, staring down, fidgeting with the astronaut’s arm. Then he was quiet.

Lee frowned. He tried to move a bit closer, but was unsure how the kid got behind the bush at the back in the first place. He grabbed a branch that looked like it already had the biggest gap and pulled it away to make it bigger, creating his own way out. " Come on, you shouldn't play back here." He said, his free hand already moving forward to try and pull the child out.

Ulric was a timid little boy, but he was also a good little boy, so he did not retreat deeper into the bushes or insist that the other boy answer him. He passively took Lee’s hand and let him guide him out, and silently bid farewell to his secret little world beneath the hedge.

Lee let go of the branch once the child was out, being careful to put it back in its place. Standing up straight, Lee looked around the bush trying to see exactly how Ulric had crawled behind it, the branches making it difficult to see the young boy's secret tunnel.

" How did you get over here anyways…?" He muttered more to himself than to the boy whom he was still holding onto his hand, to make sure he wouldn't float away into hiding again. He then glanced back at the boy to gauge his size and figure out if he was simply smaller than he seemed.

Ulric was indeed smaller than he seemed, for his clothes were a size or two too big and hid his very small body well inside.

The boy was quick to point back to the little hole in the hedge near the front side of the green yard. It seemed a simple answer. Lee had certainly seen him go in that way. Was it entirely remarkable that he found his way here? Surely Lee knew his own backyard and had been behind the hedge before.
“Just in there.” Ulric said, motioning weakly with his finger. He looked at the big playground on the opposite side of the yard, then he looked at Lee.
“Do you want to play a game?” He asked.
