In The Melodies and The Memories (CA - Saber & Ulric)

It was a quarter after five when they had arrived. Lee’s mother had invited a coworker of hers to her house for a chat, as Lee was instructed to watch the visitors child. Lee hadn't ever babysat before, but he already had a sinking feeling he wouldn't like it.

Lee’s mother had graciously shown her guest to the dining room table where she had prepared a few appetizers for their enjoyment as they talked. The two children were briefly introduced and left in the living room to play.

Lee glanced around the living room he’d only known for a few months now before pulling his focus back on the tawny haired boy in front of him. The place looked like a museum exhibit with how it had marticulasely been kept and the vintage furniture his mom always had on display. Lee felt like he hadn’t even been on the sofa more than twice now, with how little use the room actually received. This didn’t look like the kind of place you’d let a toddler run around and play. ...But he wasn’t quite dealing with a toddler, was he?

“ Your name’s Ulric, right?” Lee asked quietly in his trained polite manner, enunciating the name to make sure he got it right.

The tawny-haired little boy nodded his round chin in answer and kept his bright amber eyes on the other boy in front of him. He kept his fingers intertwined and otherwise stood very stiffly exact where the two women had left him.

Lee had been told a hundred times by his mom that it was rude to break eye contact when talking to someone but he did it anyway. Staring off towards the front door now, he rubbed his neck as he scolded himself inwardly for the behavior that came so naturally to him.

“ Um,” He tried to start. “ How old are you?” He asked as he managed to bring his dark brown eyes back to meet those of amber.

Ulric looked down. He unclasped his hand and looked at his fingers wide spread. Then he raised his right hand, palm outward.

"This many." He said. He knew the numbers, and could count higher than ten. But it seemed more convenient when one's years did not surpass the fingers of one's hand to simply show, rather than tell.

Lee nodded his head slowly. “ So.. Five? Do you like playing with toys?”

Ulric nodded his head, “Well, I do have some toys.” He affirmed, tilting his head slightly to one side and extending his hand briefly in a gesture indicating an absent fact; he appeared to wave his hand to the side, suggesting the presence of something that was not there, but in his own mind’s eye he knew the place where his toys were kept and how few there were.

Lee watched the boy with a growing frown. That wasn’t quite the kind of answer he wanted.

“ Right…” He said quietly trying to brush it off, his eyes not being able to stop themselves from drifting off elsewhere again.

“ Do you like watching movies?” He tried, now staring towards the stairs that lead up towards his bedroom.

Ulric could sense that his answers were not bringing any pleasure to the other boy. He got quiet,  lowered his chin, and simply shook his head.

Lee glanced down to see the boy shake his head, as he started to finally realize how timid he was. “ That’s okay,” He tried to say reassuringly. “ Movies are more of a big kid thing anyways.”

He looked back up at the stairs before returning to look back at Ulric.

“ I have lots of toys in my bedroom you can play with. Do you want to see?” He asked, trying to inject some pep in his voice like he saw many adults do when talking to younger children.

Ulric looked in the direction he had seen the women go. He found himself holding his hands together again, and longing for them to come back. To the other boy, he simply looked and shook his head.
