Concerning the Moon and the Mountains (SP-RP5/6) 01/2015

Overview

This thread is for our members who have previously purchased exclusive, or (red/blue) characters in association with the Calagathorm Werewolf pack URPC.

The timeline for this role play is set in between (RP5): "Secrets in the Orchard" and (RP 6): Echoes from the Past".

For the information of those who were familiar with and participated in the character plot, "Riding Bear Back" (wherein some of these characters might also have appeared,) this thread is set to follow just after that time.

Mae

Walking leisurely through the formal halls, Miss Betine payed little attention to the details and scents that surrounded her. The pale wall décor, as with the very patterns and tiles on the ceilings, were things that had become familiar over the course of many years. Nothing here was strange to her.

Diane had come casually from the elevator, only pausing to bid the women at the lobby desk a quick and fond hello before continuing from them to the large foyer. Entering then by the long way and seating herself appropriately on the office sofa without so much as a glance at the company in the room, she made herself comfortable.

The pictures that adorned the wall over her head were homely enough, each had hung in its place for many years and as such were easily overlooked and unappreciated by more familiar eyes. Meanwhile the window that encompassed the expanse of the opposite wall provided the large interior with a pleasant view of the splendid morning outside and natural lighting which filled each stately corner.

Everything in Diane's common manner denoted some air of expectancy, however she masked it under playful regard to formality so as not to offend those in the room of higher rank, who were so clearly occupied in matters of which she was unrelated. She thus said not a word and pretended not to care, though of course she payed plenty of mind to what they said in hushed tones, particularly after she had seated herself and awaited on them patiently.

Diane's presence did not go unnoticed, and the men gathered near the window were mindful of her ear. But whether because or in spite of her, their deep voices were lowered, and presently the most prominent member of their company signaled that the meeting was over. So each man then began bidding the others good day, and with a shake of the hand or perhaps a nod, they left the room and went their way with other business on their minds.

It was when the others had all gone that the respective gentleman approached Diane, and she, glancing up as the gentleman's shoes appeared in her visual range, at last received his greeting.
"Good morning Dionallus."

Diane stood from her seat and smiled up into the fellow's face, who offered his arm, and when she had accepted it, began leading her across the bright room to the window.
"I apologize for the earlier interruption, Father." Diane said softly, looking more to him than to the greenery and sophisticated streets below. "I hope the Betas were not too displeased. Were you discussing anything that I should regret to overhear?"

The man smiled gently and petted the hand of his daughter which was draped over his arm. "I doubt you would regret to hear anything." He said pleasantly, "Though I should prefer it if you did not. We were simply discussing some new additions and financial agreements, but I'm afraid some of us got quite carried away, as that meeting should have been over hours ago."

"New additions? Surely these are the knights of the empire if the Betas should be so excited." Diane commented carefully.

Mr. Betine laughed lightly at this, for he saw through it and had worded his previous reply so as to raise her suspicions to this end. "Beulanncan's boy was born last night," he went on to explain, "And somewhere between then and this morning he has apparently shown enough promise to surely convince the entirety of the council."

"Beta Beulannacan has consistently clung to these hopeless endeavors in the imaginary greatness of his bloodline for years." Diane said, rolling her eyes with disinterest. Then lowering her voice and looking out the window, she added in something of a callous tone, "Now it looks as if to surpass the reason and the expectations of all."

"We could certainly expect no less from him," Mr. Betine said calmly. "But there might very well be some potential in the child which the council might make use of."

With Diane's next words her eyes narrowed spitefully. "Even should he grow up to be a truly incompetent individual, I'm sure Beta Beulannacan will secure some grand title for him."

When Mr. Betine heard this reply, he furrowed his brow and released his daughter's hand as he turned to face her, who in return took on a childish pretense of submission.
"Where have you been these last few weeks, Dionallus?"

"I have been visiting friends in Middlecrest, but I took the boys with me as you requested." Diane smiled, then cast a glance to the floor and turned down her chin. "I thought that would please you."

Mr. Betine frowned and turned aside.

"I'm expecting company shortly." He said after a pause that rested uneasily in the air. "I would like you to stay for that meeting."

Diane lifted her eyes with more genuine interest and raised a skeptical brow. "Is it something I should concern myself of?"

With his dark gaze turned out the window, Beta Betine replied simply. "Yes."

Then at that moment the door from which the previous company had departed opened, and someone else entered the office foyer...

Deseree

He certainly blended in with the morning squabble.

With his crisp black dress shirt buttoned all but at the collar, sleeves rolled to his elbow and a coffee in each hand, Silas entered the foyer of the familiar office building. The unruly mop of hair on his head had been combed back into a neat tail, with those ever rebellious strands having still escaped here and there, meanwhile the beard that lined his jaw was a lost cause entirely. Regardless, he managed a relatively clean appearance. and a pot or two of coffee later he was certainly alert enough for a morning meeting.

Upon entering, his eyes easily found Beta Betine and Diane, and he paused briefly before making his way to join their company. Though he moved near, he kept a respectable distance. It seemed that presently the Beta was preoccupied, and Silas debated giving him a moment to recollect himself, especially considering the group whom he encountered on the way in.. however his presence was undoubtedly already known and he felt no need to prolong the inevitable.

"Good morning Mr. Betine, Miss Diane." he began, offering something of a friendly smile, and then extending a cup of coffee in the direction of the Beta. "I didn't realize you would be gracing us with your presence today, Miss, otherwise I would have brought you something." the statement was made more towards Beta Betine in an inquiry, but nevertheless was directed at Diane, all while upholding a tone of due courtesy and respect. Still, the spy couldn't help but feel there was something amiss in the air, and anybody else might simply disregard it - but such was not Silas' nature. He had to question everything through some means or another, and he hoped that all would be explained in the meeting.

Diane lifted her eyes to the face of the man who had entered the room, her gaze narrowing as she recognized him, for he was not a stranger to her. Yet she was not so put off by his presence as to speak his name at that moment, and though it came immediately to her mind, she held her silence.

Mr. Betine turned around slowly after Silas had spoken and he received the cup from the latter's hand casually. This was something Diane observed keenly, but did not reveal her interest in, and she continued to watch the interaction with discreet curiosity.

"Actaeon," Beta Betine said in greeting, and Diane might have noticed that he spoke with a tone somewhat pleased. The Beta then turned toward Diane and trained his eyes upon her countenance as he introduced the other man to her personally.
"Diane, this is Actaeon." He said, "He is a specialized Information Analyst who has been selected by the council to assist in a very particular matter, which I believe you will have an interest in."

Diane visually assessed the situation as she watched her father, and she saw very clearly that formality was given where it would not otherwise be if not for some unseen fact; What fact that was, Diane readily guessed, and her displeasure could easily be detected.
Yet she adorned a smile and stepped forward, affixing her eyes on this, Actaeon, with a masterful facade.

"Actaeon? We have previously had the pleasure, have we not?" Diane spoke with grace and clarity, her lips curling upward near the corners and overall her countenance seeming to brighten. "We met near Middlescrest, if I remember correctly."

Diane extended a formality that was especially gracious when she extended her hand out to Silas, and it seemed that it had an ill-effect behind the eyes of her father, who saw through her deceit with keen awareness.
Still, the Beta expected the formality to be accepted by Silas if for no other reason than respect for Diane's rank; and that was something Diane knew and gained genuine pleasure from knowing. But the underlining communication was however, known without words between the two of them, and afterward, Mr. Betine would have more to say...

Listening as he was introduced, Silas' eyes moved easily from the other male to Diane, and they did not move from her until he had finished the introduction. "Thank you, Mr. Betine." he uttered with a smile, before training his eyes back to Diane as she spoke.

When she finished, there was some brief look first of bitter curiosity on Silas' face, then briefer still was a gleam in his eye of a man who had just learned the weakness of his foe. A smile presented himself, and he nodded to her lightly.

"Of course." the man reached out and shook her hand gently a couple of short times, before looking to Mr Betine. "I am only disheartened that I did not learn of such a beautiful member of the Betine family sooner!" Silas chirped with a short laugh, "Ah, I jest. Yes, we did meet in Middlecrest previously. Your daughter is quiet the capable young lady, Mr. Betine, as I'm sure you're aware. Nothing less could be expected of your family." he spoke with due respect and sincerity, and still there was something else. Then his icy gaze shifted to Diane.

"So looking back, I should not have been surprised to see her perusing some task diligently on her own in the forests around Middlecrest. Once I realized she was one of us, I approached and insisted to follow her in her endeavors for some time. I don't mean to undermine your daughters abilities, however I could not in good conscience - no matter how capable she is - let her alone in that time and place."

Now he looked to a clock and noted the time, and his gaze was temporarily occupied on the door, for her was sure that Eva and Jodecai had not been that far behind..

Drake made his way down the busy morning sidewalk everyone bustling and making their way to work, he too was on his way to an extremely important meeting he was called to, yet he had a noticeable clumsiness to his serious demeanor, the occupied streets and loud environment was far from the norm for his morning routine, and to make matters worse, he had been forced to wear this tight suit and tie by Eva, an extremely uncomfortable attire from his ideal outfit, yet if this meeting was half as important as he was lead to believe, it was clearly appropriate.

He came across the tall building the meeting was said to take place, though considered mundane to others, he cherished the size and modern design of the interior and exterior, childlike wonder as he took notice of the paintings and plants furnishing the lobby, he made a silent nod towards the clerk before entering the elevator, he carefully clicked the number corresponding with the number he was given, checking twice to be certain he was going to the correct floor, his determination to complete something on the first try showed in the smallest of tasks.

He held his hands lazily in his pocket as he walked down the hallway into the small waiting room, he noticed the group of people conversing by the window, but instead of joining in he kept to himself, admittedly small talk wasn’t his strong point per se, he would rather cut straight to the point and collect as much useful information as he could from a conversation, rather than waste his breath with mindless banter he had zero concern for.

Nonetheless the view was breath taking for him, he took a moment to silently enjoy the simplistic pleasure that was a busy morning city, he could vaguely hear the group next to him making conversation, yet payed no mind, completely uninterested his mind wandered about Eva, and when she would arrive.

Aim

Eva glanced at her watch as she walked into the building's entrance, ah, not to late but not early, perfect. Strolling through the lobby, she didn't stop to look at the decorations, though she seemed to deem enough time to passed a few friendly words with the woman there before continuing.
So both gentlemen were already here then? Ahh, yes, that was pleasant.
Stopping by the elevator, her hand glided onto the button and she waited for it to come back down.
Checking her watch again, her brow wrinkled slightly, it would be unseemly if this took much longer..

Looking up as the ding sounded the arrival of the machine, her brow unfurled, ah yes, much better.

Using the limited time to smooth out her hair and clothing, though nothing seemed to be out of place. Adjusting her gloves, she walked out into the room.
She nodded towards them, smiling, she didn't want to interrupt them. She took a moment to look over Drake, pleased he took her.. advice.

Mae

Diane's pleasant manner did not deteriorate as she took Silas' hand and listened to his carefully worded compliments, quite easily seeing that he also meant to expose her actions to her father. But it mustn't be forgotten that it was Diane in the first place who had made the exposure possible, and she did so quite purposefully.

Mr. Betine seemed strangely unaltered while Silas spoke, and yet almost by his will the atmosphere of the conversation moved with uneasy trepidation.

"Your concerns are duly appreciated, Actaeon." Mr Betine said calmly without any change to his demeanor. His free hand came to rest behind his back, and whether or not he thought anything of the obvious diversity between the two stories, the subject of the conversation changed. "I trust your previous engagement was successfully concluded, and that you were given suitable time to rest?"

While her father spoke, Diane watched Silas. Her eyes seemed to play a taunt before them and her smile never receding, for it was made known in that moment that she could not be compromised.
Yet it was also Diane who, knowing her father well, perceived that the earlier foreboding did not come for her sake nor in her favor. And thus were many dark theories confirmed in Diane's mind as regarding Actaeon.

"Well, timing is a telling sign that we hardly pretend our lives are passable, as they say. Do they not?" Diane casually never failed to appear pleasant as she brought her father's attention to the other company in the room and away from the conversation at hand.

Mr. Betine had not neglected to notice when Eva and Drake entered the room, but only now turned to formally recognize their presence as he greeted each one in turn.
"Yes, we might begin." He said, seeing that all who were invited had arrived and that business could now be conducted.

The Beta then turned to his office and opened the door, stepping aside to beckon all who would be at the meeting to go in before himself and so he would be the one to close the door. This attitude would precondition the significance of the meeting and ensure that no unwanted ears could slip in.

So it was that Diane was the first to enter, though she lingered by Silas a moment longer while the earlier atmosphere dispersed, and went in with a more serious countenance.

Deseree

Though he did not expect Mr. Betine to react directly to Diane's actions at the moment, as the spy had come to learn it was not his nature, he was satisfied enough that he had brought it up. Despite that, Diane's subtle taunt and that oh-so-pleased smile upon her face would suffice to prick at Silas' nerves, though he would not let his inner thoughts and emotions betray his collected expression for a fraction of a second. On the contrary, he only offered a content and sincere enough smile in return.

His gaze was cast to the Beta when he directed they should begin the meeting, and he nodded, watching past Diane as she walked in and following behind. He easily found a place in the room, he would not sit and rather waited for Betine, sipping at his coffee while quietly contemplating a great many things... so it was he would find himself absentmindedly staring at the wall, and his attentions were focused on his superior from that point onward.
