Borrowed Strength (CA - Matthew & Zander)

PreviousPage 9 of 10Next

" Davey doesn't have an answering machine." Matthew said quietly as he pulled off the helmet and left in on the bikes seat.

His eyes floated up towards the stars as the sense of melancholy returned to his young countenance.

Zander shrugged, deciding he wouldn't ask where he had called earlier.

"Well if there's anyone you want to call, now's your opportunity..." Zander trailed off, skirting his eyes off to the side.

Outside of the threat of their imminent destruction, he had realized what unlikely traveling companions they were. Last thing he needed was to be accused of kidnapping.  He intended to see this kid to safety, then make a call over to Chapman to help locate some means of responsible adult supervision... maybe this Davey person.

Not that he planned to tell Matthew that, who seemed just as sooner to run from the face of help.

Matthew eventually moved over to the nearby table slowly, dropped his back pack there, sat down and buried his face into it. A small sniffle could be heard from him as his hands joined in trying to bury his face from sight.

Zander was initially preoccupied checking his route on a map to notice Matthew's sniffles.  Yet just as he was tracing his fingers along the route, his interest was perked and his expression softened to a degree.  He sighed, running his fingers along the length of his scalp.

"Hey kid..." he said quietly, ignoring the fact he really wasn't all that much older than Matthew, "We'll find you your way home, okay? We just need to find a safe place, regroup, and get to the next steps alright? This night has been weird, but it's just temporary.."

Another sniff came before Matthew responded quietly, " I don't have a home."

Zander's posture shifted subtly.  While there hadn't been anything outright intimidating in it before, he hunched over his back more and averted his eyes.

"Thats alright," he breather heavily after a moment, "I don't have a home either.  Let's just get somewhere safe, and we can figure out the rest of the steps from there okay ?"

He glanced outward to the passing cars on the freeway.

"Anyways, my cousin and uncle seem nice enough.  We should be safe there".

No sound came from Matthews direction, not even a sniffle that had been heard earlier. But still, his face remained buried in his backpack with his hands shielding his eyes from being seen.

Zander sighed but didn't say anything further.  There wasn't anything he could say that would make it better.  Instead he walked around a while in the rest stop, enjoying the cold night air and the stars up above.

Finally he found a pay phone at the far end.  He inserted some quarters and dialed.

"Hey Megan, it's me" he said casually

"Uh huh...." he responded, before following, "Listen, I might have picked someone up around the way"

He ran his fingers along his hair, "He's just a kid. Still figuring out the best place for him but --"

He sighed, "Yeah, he's 'one of ours'- you don't need to be dramatic about--"

He stopped short, "Yeah alright, see you in a few hours"

He hung up and walked back to Matthew.  He hoped the little bit of solitude might have helped.  He was sure the kid hadn't exactly been planning to spend the day with him.

"Hey kid, just gave my cousin a call," he smiled, "Gave her a heads up, and she said you're welcome to stay too.  Also mentioned something to me about not being too obnoxious and talking your ear of or anything- so with that we can hit the road if you're ready. Shouldn't be more than a few hours now"

As Zander's voice was heard, Matthews eyes opened and shortly afterwards his head raised up looking now at Zander as he was making his phone call.

After Zander was finished and had come over and announced his plans, Matthew shook his head.

" I don't need your help," he grumbled as he got his backpack situated on his back once and moved to leave the rest stop.

Zander held out his hands as though a magician proving he had nothing up his sleeves.

"I never said you did," he replied, "But I would say my offer beats a night out in the desert...this restop is the only civilization besides the road for the next 50 miles"

He sighed, "I won't make you go anywhere you don't want to go, but I just ask you be open to the possibility.  My cousin is..  interesting.  I think you might find there's a lot to learn if you're open to it".
